good luck finding them... if you can find fs19579's, you are getting new old stock. . it has been superceeded [or so cummins told me] by fs19579E. . thin plastic ends, with filter media glued to them. . i tried ordering the non E ones, but they are/were not avalable, so i have a box of fs19579e's sitting at home. they will work just as well, and the treehugger in you can be proud to help the envrioment:-laf:-laf:-laf

CRAP! I was afraid of that. I noticed all the FS19579's disappeared and were replaced by FS19579E's, but was hoping the part itself was unchanged.

Methinks the "E" stands for "Economy".

THANKS A LOT, FLEETGUARD!!! #@$%! #@$%!

Maybe I'll email them and complain...

Here's what I emailed them. Let's hope the response is not marketing propaganda...

To whom it may concern:

I'm writing to protest the recent changeover from FS19579 fuel filters (2003-up Cummins ISBe for Dodge) to FS19579E models. These filters are of clearly inferior construction to the "old" FS19579's.

Normally you guys put out such high quality stuff. What were you thinking with this move? I'd gladly pay a little more per filter to get the old quality back. When you began offering the FS19800E's and people noticed the shoddy construction, I figured I could just continue to run the old FS19579's, but you went and eliminated those too!

Does the "E" stand for "Economy"?

I fear this move could be a sign of things to come from Fleetguard.

I'm sorry, ronmonical... guess I've hijacked the thread. Feel free to hijack one of my threads...

What about other brands like WIX, Baldwin or Donaldson? Maybe they won't change to the Enhanced version, to make changing easier, according to literature. Are the Fleetguard filters superior for fuel also, similar to oil?

I know purolator was reboxing Fleetguard stratopore fuel filters at one point (had both Fleetguard AND stratopore on the filter)... but the last one I purchased (still in the box) over a year ago was made in brazil and it was a VERY cheap looking thing (and did not have any logo on it)...

I know Baldwin and Wix were not approved oil filters, but I know plenty of members here run them... not sure about their fuel filters though... I run both Wix oil and gas filters on my cars...

And I know Wix reboxes/rebadges some Donaldson's for their own... and Donaldson makes the majority of Amsoil's filters IIRC.

Basically you take a chance with other manufacturer's filters... at least Fleetguard tends to have a higher standard of quality...

For post #37. The FS doesn't stand for fleetguard stratopore. The FS prefix means it will filter water out of the fuel. The other fuel prefix FF will let water pass through, Like the Glacier diesel 2 micron filters are FF5320 & FF5319. Thats why they recommend leaving you factory fliter in place, to retain the water seperation.

Well guys, I have searched far and wide to try and lay my hands on a fuel filter that doesn't look like a cheap lawnmower air filter. I went to Scheid and ordered some of their new FS19800E CTD 7micron fuel filters. They were of the same cheap looking construction that I received from Geno's last May. I went to my local Dodge dealer and found the same thing in a mopar box. I even ordered a filter from our local Cummins distributor. Same thing!!

I do not feel comfortable using this "new and improved filter". We should band together with Ryan B and make Fleetguard/Cummins show us test data that proves to us that these filters will do the job. Who ever is touting these newer filters as being better than the old design will have to prove it to me.

I singled out Geno's in error. My apologies. This issue belongs to Fleetguard/Cummins. If they were really concerned with owners of CTD trucks, they would manufacture and sell a quality 5 micron absolute filter that would be a direct replacement for the cheap looking item they are now selling. I would pay twice as much for it. What do you think??????

My CAT filter is on a PermaCool base. Got it from Summit or Jegs. It's the only one they have. I think the thread is 3/4 or 1 x 14. CAT makes a filter base also, but I couldn't find it...

I should have it tomarrow. (12/13/06) I'm going to go buy 2 more so unless someone finds it first check back then.

The filter head I used is a fleetguard FG/ 142784S. It has O. R. B. threads. I don't know if there is one with N. P. T. threads or not.

Today I got an email back that my email was being forwarded up the chain to someone who could answer. Then I got another email with 5 real people on it (instead of the generic org box fleetmaster. us) all CC'd and a name of the guy most directly responsible for the new filters.

I'm hoping these people will take the time to respond intelligently with straight talk.

I'll post when I hear from them, but will not give their email addresses.

Info on aftermarket fuel filters and bases

Fleetguard 142784S filter base comes in 1/2 NPT and ORB. Cummins dealer quoted $19. 00 in Minnesota. See other filters, bases/heads below. WIX also has a head for $15 on fleetfilter.com under miscellaneous. Nice if you want to mount to vertical surface.

Alright, I agree that it is better to add a secondary filter to your existing fuel system. The point is that we already have OEM fuel filtration systems in place. Why should we have to spend additional hard earned money on more fuel filtration devices. My previous truck was a 2002 GMC D/Ally. The fuel system was prone to injector failures just like we are seeing with some CTD's.

To begin with, the GMC had a spin on fuel filter canister larger than most oil filters with provisions for water separation and draining. Based on the injector failures, GMC ultimately provided a 200,000 mile injector warranty to all it's customers. But, they also upgraded their filter for improved filtration and put the first one on for free at the dealer.

Why are DCX and Cummins going in the opposite direction?? They took a robust looking 10 micron filter cartridge and replaced it with what they say is an improved 7 micron filter cartridge that looks like it belongs on a cheap lawnmower carburetor.

Sorry, I get fired up when the only viable alternative is to spend more money on redundant systems. Why the h--- can't Fleetguard provide us with a robust 5 micron drop in replacement fuel filter cartridge??????? If it cost's $20. 00 to $30. 00, I don't care, I'll take a case.

Ryan B is on the right track. If he wants to start a list of constituents, I will be the first to support this cause. Often a groundswell of grass roots support results in action.

Chuck

CTRice good post. I would like to add a second filter but why should I have to. And will they void my warranty with a second filter?

The add-on filter I currently use is a CarQuest 86123 - which is supposedly a 12 micron filter. I use it on the transfer line between the in-bed 50 gallon tank and the main tank, and normally run ALL my fuel to the main tank from that in-bed tank. I have both the OEM fuel filter in place, as well as my added Frantz sub micron filter - the above mentioned CarQuest filter could be considered a pre-filter I suppose, and might be all that's needed or practical in that position. But, when it comes time to replace it anyway, I'd sure like to located a lower micron one if there's one that interchanges with it...

The filter thread is listed as 1-12 on the NAPA website, so doesn't look like any listed further above would fit...

sorry it took so long for me to reply with my parts list but i made most of this up with surplus from work. the base is a 4N8897 has 3/8 pipe inlet and -5 store out about 68 dollars the first bracket is 4P2413 dont have price but its about 24. 00 dollars. made the second bracket. you also need a piece for the base 6N4414 7 dollars and a gasket 1P0436. the outlet fitting i dont have part number for but its -5 male stor boss to tee -5 stor boss and jic -6 out put a -5 90 degree to -4 jic fitting in the tee and hook up my fuel pressure gauge. i got from cat if anyones dieing for number ill look up about 10 dollars i think but it made the whole thing slick i thought. also the 12mm fitting for the cp3 and the stock fuel filter i got from vulcan.

1"-12 is a common thread size on detroit diesels, and hydraulic filters... i know donaldson makes some 5µ [99. 8%] filters with that thread, i will try and see if i can find you part numbers for 5µ or if there is any 2µ with that thread.

norman filter makes a 3µ hydraulic filter that should work ok. .

Thanks Nick - I'll keep watching here, and do some searching on my own as well - I had wanted to get the brand and part # off my filter head, but wasn't able to see it with the filter in place - maybe later...

As I recall, I bought it thru NAPA - it's the same one I used previously on my '91 Dodge...
