None of these filters are absolute. If they were 2m absolute they would be the size of a gallon for proper flow.

You might be right, but I still suspect the Fleetguard published numbers are in absolute rather than nominal. If you check the dimensions of their filters they are quite large.

The racor 2M filter I have is absolute - rated around 97%. However, as implied above, the flow rate is pretty slow. No big deal in my case though, since the filter is installed between my aux and main tank only. It fills the main tank faster than I can burn it, so that works for me.

It *MIGHT* not be a "big deal", IF you ignore other potential sources of fuel contamination than can still occur AFTER initial filtering - dunno about the 3rd generation systems, and what wear particles from the lift pump and such might contribute, but on the 2nd generation stuff, the fuel-lubed and cooled LP as well as the injection pump itself all add their own steady bits of shed wear particles - and for owners adding additional pusher pumps, that percentage simply increases.

*I* personally prefer my improved filtration to be right in the fuel flow to the engine, where the protection is constantly in effect, regardless of what's happening ahead of it!

Strictly speaking, this is impossible, since there's no way to mount a filter between the injector pump and the injectors. Any way you cut it, contaminants from the injector pump will enter the injectors.

As I have said from the beginning, that's the problem with common rail injectors: extreme sensitivity to wear at the needle and seat.

I wasn't suggesting installing a finer filter between the injection pump and the injectors - but AFTER the various other cruder and dirtier pumps running in the system. Use of a quality filter ONLY at the tank inlet IGNORES the many other potential contamination points that are present AFTER that point!

My Frantz sub-micron filter is installed after the stock LP and the pusher that feeds it - sure, any additional contaminents that are introduced by the injection pump and injectors will not be caught until the next pass thru the system - but they WILL be caught, unlike filtering that is only done on the initial tank fill!

With regard to the Fleetguard fuel filter housing I mentioned earlier (the FH-230), the part number is FH23040 (no WIF sensor included). It took me 2 days to track down someone who would even recognize that as a valid Fleetguard part number. The price is $625. 95 for that unit. Wow. Expensive, but a very nice piece of equipment. By the time you add a pusher pump you're getting up around $1000 for the complete filter arrangement. Ouch.

... . HMMMmmm - sorta makes one of THESE:

#ad

with far BETTER filtration, replacement filter elements easily locally available for about 80 cents apiece - and a total cost of around $150, sorta seems a BARGAIN by comparison! :D :D Oo.

But, the Frantz doesn't offer a heater option. I insist on a 12v fuel heater option.

Nonetheless, you're right, Gary, I could install a Frantz and my own preheater and still be 1/2 the price of that Fleetguard unit. But I just like that fancy Fleetguard model so much... ;)
