Alright so I was talking to a mechanic buddy of mine and he said he straight took the muffler and resonator out of his 01 and it was fine and did a little better on gas! Is this okay? should I do it since I cannot afford an exhaust right now! second ? I need to do my valve adjustment can somebody point me too a web site or a page here that I can see exactly how to do it!

Technically I believe it is a violation of the EPA tag (law) on the truck... but I love the sound and quicker response you get from the straight pipe... has a real nice ring to it. You will notice an increase in noise inside the cab, I dont mind it, some people do... If you live in an area where the police are vigilant it could be a problem (noise violation), I found if you pay attention and dont get on the Go pedal at the wrong time the police pay it no mind.
Valve adjustment I cant help you out on, I just took mine to a Cummins shop and had them do it, think it was $175.

against the law huh? what if I just take the resonator out? will thatmake a big difference? then later I could put a straight through muffler on it!

I believe both are part of the EPA noise junk... I plan to pull both on the wife's '00 to get a little easier breathing, but I would imagine if you want to start slow I would pull the muffler and leave the resonator, some folks like to leave resonator to reduce the in cab drone...
I wouldn't worry too much about the law part, but just think people should know before they get r done...

My experience has been that taking the muffler and resonator off results in nasty cab drone at cruising speed (4. 10 gears). The resonator adapts from 3 - 4 inch. The cheapest upgrade is to hack the muffler off and put a 4" tailpipe on. I'd let the resonator on. Just to keep drone away. That's my (overpriced) 2cents worth.

It does make a considerable increase in cab noise removing both, so if that is a concern... .
For many folks (myself included) the drone is tolerated well since you will find yourself rolling the windows down so you can hear it better ;) I find myself especially looking forward to tunnels.

Some states consider the turbo as a muffling device, at least I've seen that in some other threads. It's the cat that can get you in real trouble if you remove it. Can't remember if the 99's have it or not. I straight piped my 12v 97 and loved the sound. No drone.

Don't know about the exhaust, but a haynes manual will give you all the info you need for a valve adjustment. Real easy to do, just have your metric tools on hand and a feeler gauge. I did mine while doing an injector swap.

Good Luck

I just noticed you are in the Navy--sorry, the Haynes manual doesn't have a coloring section nor is it explained as if writing for a 1st grader:D

It should make a world of difference when it comes to flow, most of the restriction is the muffler, the resonator is pretty minimal when it comes to flow restriction.
Was swapping back and for almost daily between my dad's '01 with muffler and my '99 straight, my '99 will jump right to 20psi when you get on it, his takes a couple seconds to build.

Hey now, lets not get nasty. Its more like writing for a 2nd grader :p

Active Navy for 11 years, 9 to go.

No I agree with the first comment 1st grade is giving a lot of my command a lot of recoginition(SEABEES) lol alright soI am gonna take the muffler off tonight and just go with 4" out the back!!! thanks a lot guys!

I have decided just to do the muffler unless I can figure out a cheap way to do a single stack passenger side! I just cannot find a cheap kit! being in the Navy I don't get paid that much lol.

The reason I ran for years with only the resonator was that makes for one of the best sounding trucks on the road and the price is definitely right. If you dump the resonator, it just doesnt have that Mack truck tone anymore. You just have to hear it. As far as performance goes, cutting & replacing the muffler with a 4" pipe you will gain a bit in all areas. Maybe about half of the increase in performance that you woulld get goin to a good 4". Just another penny's worth.

just stirp that **** off it does nothing but rob power, I was pull a grade with a 20' stock trailer loaded with cows and just couldn't go know were it just wouldn't let my turbo spool up, so the next day I cut it off, as far as the valve ajustment look in a service manual, or ask a dealer. If you truck is bone stock you will know a big differents in profromance when you cut that stuff out.
