man, they are LOUD!!!!!!

there was a huge ladder truck cruising through the mountains up near our cabin, and I could hear it from miles out... I got out on the road and chased it down and was passing it and letting him pass me so I could hear it.

not the most efficient engines on earth, but the can take a beating and are cheap to maintain from what I understand... though, I also understand they takke a lot of maintaining :)

I'll take the sound of a Cummins anyday, I own a Detroit and that "sound" represents a lot of negatives to me. I was talking to fellow tdr member Tony Youngblood the other day about his 318 powered Dodge dump and he summed it up perfectly "Alot of talk, not a lot of action"

engines

Yes they sure do sound nice. Smooth power. It took the one a long time to fireup. Interesting story on the landing crafts. Each engine sure has its own sounds. The 3 L-19's that I worked around many years ago, you could tell which one was taking off and landing by their sound. :D

I used to maintain a fleet of workboats. One had a 4-53 Detroit in it, and one problem it had was that it would, on occasion, rip it's exhaust bellows (it had a stack for exhaust) and since it had a rather large engine room, you could hear that thing SCREAMING from the marina while underway when the bellows blew out. It was actually funny. :-laf :-laf
