2 things died at once !

2001 4x4 2500 long bed SLT, 103K miles.
Yesterday when I put it away everything was A-OK.
This morning fired it up, the airbag light was on and the cruise control doesn't light up or work.
Where should I start ? Thanks.

It is in the steering wheel and makes connections to the things on of the steering wheel. Winds up and unwinds as the steering wheel turns. Does the truck have a lot of miles on it?

You may want to check grounding straps and wires along with cannon plugs/electrical connectors looking for corrosion or a faulty connection. It seems odd to me that 2 seemingly unrelated things like that would go bad over night. Also, look for wire bundles that may have been damaged by a mouse/field rat that possibly could be making a home in that nice warm truck when you park it. I am having a similar battle with a mouse trying to make a home in my Kubota RTVX 1100C cab fan air inlet box. Make sure your battery connections are clean and corrosion free as well as both batteries up to full and proper charge. Electrical gremlins can be extremely difficult to fix sometimes. Clock Spring woes. Try turning wheel a full turn and then see if the cruise light will come on. I've replaced the clock spring on mine a few times, you can get them aftermarket now I think Cardi makes them? Anyhow on mine the steering wheel buttons are old and I can't fine new anymore, have taken them out and tried to clean them with elec. contact cleaner and small screwdrivers seems to help a bit but after a short while they don't work again. Another thing to try on the cruise button = as soon as you start the engine = when you let go of key, push the cruise button. At this point (on mine) I've given up on the radio buttons and am pleased when the cruise works. As for ABS light, check grounds, unplug connections and clean pins. Sometimes just unplugging and plugging back in works. Good luck.

I noted my truck has an old air bag recall that was never done. I'm not gonna mess with taking off the wheel that has an airbag in it. Heading for FL in a couple of weeks driving our Magnum. Think I'll worry about this come spring. BTW it's not the ABS light.

As long as you disconnect batteries and wait 5 minutes before messing with you'll be fine. I've done my CS a few times and had the wheel off several times as well - manual tells you disconnect batteries, wait 5 minutes and go. The horn pad should come off by removing 4 screws located on back side of steering wheel - at least on my 99 it does. Then you'll see the wires going to the horn & bag unplug and you're ready to proceed.
