I am considering a 4500 or 5500 4x4 truck for towing. One problem I have is in order to park my 5th wheel trailer next to my house I need to reverse up my cul-de-sac, up hill in to my driveway. Currently I have a F250 with manual locking hubs. I put it in 4-Lo and leave the hubs unlocked. I can push my 13,000 lb fifth up the hill no problem. I am wondering how I can do this if I buy a new Dodge.

I know I can customize the transfer case but I was hoping someone know how to do this an easier way, like put a switch in the wire going to the transfer case such that it would go in to low range but not lock in the front drive shaft.

Anyone got some good ideas here.

Steve

To be honest I don't think you will have to worry with the Dodge cause of the lower gearing in trans Even in Rev I have a 08 2500 with the 6 sp auto n yes the bigger truck's have a different trans but I believe the gearing is close to what is in the 68rfe trans

The 4. 44 gears and six speed Aisin will be entirely capable of backing your fifth wheel uphill into your parking spot. Buy it, hook it up, back it into place, and don't worry about it.

I think what Steve is worried about, is the gear wind up and the wear on the transfer case and other components when he steers... We have that on our 04 & 05 when we back...

I just try and not do a lot of it... sometimes it hard to get out of 4WL.

Hope this helps. .

My second gen was easy to do with a vacuum switch to reverse the signal to the center axle disconnect motor. I dont know how the 4th gens work but a 2 low option is great for trailers.

I am not totally sure, but I believe what HBarlow is talking about is 1st gear in the c & c will do it just fine. No need for four wheel drive. Sorry a 4 lo

I know I can get Dynatrac manual locking hubs for the 2500/3500 but has anyone heard of manual locking hubs for the 4500/5500's?
When I make my turn up in to the driveway I have a good couple of inches on either side of my 5er, no sweat!
I am sure that any Dodge Cummins is strong enough but it is nice to have the lower gearing to ease it in.
