Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 20 MPG! Yea Baby!

I just filled up the truck at the same spot, pump, whatever. 450 miles on 22. 13 gallons. The milage just keeps getting better on this used unit I bought about a month ago. So far I have only done routine maintenance items and slid plate and AFC. I have owned several CTD's including the recently sold 05, and this is the best milage I have seen so far. 4x4, QC 2500 5 speed, 12 V, Oh well, enough bragging, I guess I just find it hard to believe this truck is 8 years old and does this well. Hope everyone else has this sort of luck.

I get 19-22 MPG depending how far I put my foot in and if I am running in 5th or not. I agree not bad for 9yrs old and 103,000 miles.

Ditto that, even the same mileage. WIll see if that changes with my newfound power (370's) :-laf

Mine's 2wd, but I get 22. 5 or better every tank except towing with 130,000 miles on it.

The best MPG mod I've done (besides swapping out the 4. 10's for 3. 54's) is having the timing bumped to 16. That alone bumped me from 20 mpg to 21 when I was running 4. 10's. The additional timing should be one of your first mods IMHO. The 4" exhaust was no real improvement over the walker muffler - the kitty.

These still are impressive numbers. I am sure and do know of other 12 valvers that aren't so lucky, but as a whole these trucks do well. I don't think I will ever really understand why they smoke more than the newer diesels but get significantly better milage on average. Yes I know someone will relate a story about a Dmax that gets 32 MPG, but back to reality, these 12 valves are nice engines. My 03 Dmax got decent milage @ 17. 0 and my 05 CTD got 17-17. 5 and I wasn't complaining, but in my position and this point in my life, I have to say I am enjoying this new old truck better than the aforementioned trucks. The 2nd gen trucks seem to actually have more room in the front portion or at least feels roomier side to side. The engine fires right off unlike the newer ones (and the oil isn't black after just 2 miles) . The tags and insurance also are nicer when the bill gets due. All in all I figure between finance charges, tags, insurance, actual price etc, I will have paid some 18000-19000 less for the older truck than the new one had I kept it. Now all I have to do is remember how to change my signature.

My 2000 2 wheel drive has always gotten 20 plus for highway miles including an 80 mph run from Little Rock to home in traffic. I have just changed from 275 injectors and am taking a run to the coast for a cruise(brag) next weekend and am dreading the outcome. These Jammer 3's are much more power but I am not so sure the mpg will suffer.

These trucks are great for fuel mileage. I would get 23mpg before the bombing bug hit. Now just driving I get 17-19mpg. All though Memorial weekend pulling ae 26tt and truck was fully loaded also I pulled down 18mpg at 65-70 mph . I will find out this thursday how go it is on hwy after trip to NE Iowa to return trans core.

fuel milage

i have a 94 that i drive and without correcting for the larger tires (305/70's) i get 16. 5-17. 5 hwy my wife's 01 3500 4x4 reg cab gets no beter than 15 hwy we have a friend with a 2000 2500 4x4 reg cab that gets 22. 5 i wish hers got that good. as for mine i would like to see a solid 19.

fuel mileage

I have a 94 2wd regular cab 5 speed with 3:54 gears in rear and it does fantastic on fuel mileage. Everything is standard on the truck. It only has 68,000 miles on it now since we returned from a 11,000 mile trip to Alaska. I got a little over 14 miles pulling a 5th wheel 30 ft trailer. However kept speed down to 55. Empty the truck runs way over 22 or 23 consistently. Seems to be getting better with additional miles. The key to great mileage with the 12 valver is keep the speed down. Recently had a Jacobs E-brake put on in Anchorage by Cummins there and it made a tremendous difference in feeling safe in the higher grades. I am a flatlander and had little experience in the mountains. I love the sound of the turbo when it kicks in and the same when the e-brake kicks in. Reminds a little of the days when I was a kid in the 50's with the loud pipes on our cars. Loved to hear those pipes bark and rap. Anyway I think I am a lifer with the 12 valve!!! :-laf

My 98 Qcab,2wd,3. 54,auto has gotten a best of 24. 5 that's runnuing 55-58 mph,on the road (empty)@ 75 it gets 21-22 & around town 17. 5

Yes, speed seems to make a difference.

took a ride yesterday to get a load of wood , one way empty the trip back loaded stayed at 65 MPH and kept my foot out of it on the starts ( HARD TO DO ) my average was 21. 54 mpg , these 12 valve motors are good , and to think I almost bought a V10 , glad i didn't with the cost of fuel going up , did find some #2 at $2. 52 gal , good price considering I filled up the day befor at $2. 69 gal . My correct fuel mileage

On my 95 Dodge Diesel Scotty motor home 12 valve I get around 14 normal driving speed has a everything to do with It. If I keep It under 55 I can get 17. 5 and the faster I go the mileage drops. Now on my One ton 2004 I get the best was 18 and same story the faster you go the mileage drops. Above to start looking for a gas station. This Is the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help me God!

My personal best is alil over 20. 5. I'm still young and caint stand to go 60-65 much so I cruise on the highway at 75 and still get around 17 mpg. Intown I get around 14 and towing I get 10-12 @ 65-70 mph.

has anyone thought about running the propane injection. i've been told that it can bump milage up by 5-6 mpg. but i was also told "propane used for power buys head gaskets" it would be strickly for use on the highway. no goofing around when it's on.



there are a few post on it but it's been a while since i read them all.

With no air leaks, I could push 20mpg under 55mph and 17mpg at 70mph (grade hills and so on. . no flat ground) down to 14 mpg with a dirty fuel filter. (10-12,000 on the filter)



That 1mpg for every 5 over 55 seems to fit pretty well.

Just turned 200K miles & still gettin' 20 mpg. No leaks & only burns off less than half a quart of oil between changes. Will NEVER give up this 12 valver!
