After trying to find a filter for my ETH locally, I sent a note to Geno's to see if they had the new oil filter. It seems they are selling the wrong oil filter in their 4/2/1 kits.
I spoke to Cummins SW here in Tucson the other day and it seems they have been selling the wrong filter for the 2000-2001 24 valve engine too.
Cummins has changed the filter sealing ring for the HO engines and the new filter is an LF3959 (Cummins part# 3937695), there is no Stratapore filter for the HO 24 valve engine. My local guy here (Ed) at Cummins SW didn't know this either till he checked with Cummins. They have made only one change to the filter, the sealing ring is a different design to prevent leaks at the filter/block sealing point. You can verify this P/N at http://www.cummins.com/na/pages/en/products/dodgeram/parts. cfm

(and the filter confusion continues... . ) #ad

I just sent Cummins another note pointing out
their part number and asking why there is no Stratapore listed for the 24V HO ISB.

Interesting. What is the danger of using the LF 3894? I have had one of these on for about 2000 miles and am concerned now. I see no leaks, so it seems to be working in that regard, but is the microglass not compatible with the internals of the HO motor?

I just picked up two oil and two fuel filters at Cummins South yesterday. They looked it up and gave me the 3894 oil filter. That's the same filter they've been giving me for a year now and mine is a 2001.
They sell me all my parts and I always verify that the parts are for the HO engine because I live three hours away.
I'm adding this edit. I called the parts department at Cummins South and they said the 3959 is a valid part number but only one store in Tennessee carries it. The computer shows the 3894 is the Stratapore filter. The 3959 is a cheaper version, probably the standard paper and it's $5. 00 for the filter. He double checked and said the 3894 is the right filter for my HO if I want the stratapore. I do.

I called Cummins technical assistance and they said the 3894 is the Stratapore filter for the HO engine. They said the 3935 (not the 3959) is the standard filter for that engine. They also said that if the sealing ring has been changed it is not reflected anywhere. I thought the change to the 3894 was the thickness of the external filter wall. The thickness was increased to prevent rupture due to the high pressure spike on start up.

As an update to Mick's post, let's go back to Issue 30, page 55, for details on the 24-valve oil filter progression. We start with a reference back to Issue 26, page 28, and a discussion of the details of the thicker filter shell and threaded nut assembly/thicker rubber sealing gasket. With the hardware changes, the Mopar/Fleetguard part numbers were superceded (new part numbers LF3885/5016477AA). Then came the change to the composition of the rubber sealing gasket. Again, the Mopar and Fleetguard part numbers were superceded; new number were LF3935/501647AB.

The latest change to the oil filter is applicable for all 24-valve engines and affects the rubber sealing gasket retainer. The revised gasket retainer will lower the torque necessary to remove the filter.

The gasket was previously wedged into its retainer. When the filter was installed, the gasket would rub against the filter head as it was turned into place. This caused excess removal torque. The revised retainer allows the gasket to float in the retainer and thus lowers the removal torque. The revised part numbers are LF3959/5016547AC.

To be up to date and "technically correct," the number you should use for all Cummins engines in Dodge applications is Mopar 5016547AC.

As we noted, the 5016547AC crosses over to the LF3959. Also, as noted in the Geno's Garage catalog, they have a large quantity of the LF3959 filters on order, but are waiting on delivery from Fleetguard. Fleetguard currently fills orders with the LF3935 and likely will continue to do so until the supply of LF3935 is exhausted. Please note that the Fleetguard factory is located in Cookeville, Tennessee - possibly the location Alan Reagan mentioned in the earlier post?

If a customer wants the benefit of the internal Stratapore filter media, the LF3959's Stratapore crossover equivalent continues to be the LF3894.

Note that unlike the supercession of numbers LF3885/LF3935/LF3959, 501647AA/AB/AC, the part number LF3894 has not changed as time has passed. Rather than change the part number, Fleetguard made the effective rubber seal composition and seal retainer revision without changing the part number of the LF3894. Thus, unless Fleetguard makes an unexpected part number supercession, LF3894 is the correct Stratapore filter for your 24-valve engine or 24-valve HO engine.

To be "technically correct," however, that is not the right filter. 5016547AC is the correct filter.

Clear as mud?

Darn! I sent an email directly to Fleetguard last month asking about filters, and I'll include a portion of their reply.

"The Stratapore filters for your Dodge 2001 truck with the Cummins ISB 24 Valve engine are lube filter, LF3894 and fuel filter, FS19579. "

I also purchased the Geno's 4/2/1 kit about a month ago.

Oh, well.

Good explanation, Robert. Thanks. I like the Stratapore and only had a problem with what I think was the earlier version. It tended to loosen up after an oil change and I kept having to tighten for the the first 500 miles. For the last two changes the filters have stayed tight after initial installation.

Thanks Robert,

I don't believe there are any catastrophic failures awaiting if we use the LF3894 or the LF3935. I agree, the Mopar part is probably the most correct part to use on our engines, but, I believe ANY top-rated filter would be better than NOT changing the filter. #ad

I put a Mobil-1 M1-403 on mine this time, just till Cummins SW gets their order in. The Mobil has a special oil-impregnated sealing ring that should prvide an easier removal at the next oil change.

Shelby,
I don't believe you have anything to worry about as long as it doesn't leak and you can get it off the next time you change oil.

I'm sticking with Stratapore.

Have yet to have a seal leak, and a strap-style oil filter wrench gets it off every time. At the end of the day, I care more about filter media performance than ease of removal.

LF3894's for my ETH.

I with you Mad Max. The Cummins South guys in Savannah have always given me good advice and I'm staying with what they say on the filters.

History/Notes
-------------
The Dodge 24-valve (ISB) application does not use the same oil filter as non-Chrysler ISB's. The spud sizes are different, to prevent the use of the micro-glass (synthetic media) filter on the Dodge. Extended oil change intervals are not recommended on the Dodge due to the reduced oil pan capacity--11 quarts total, compared to 16 quarts on non-Chrysler ISB applications.

In May 1999, an improved oil filter canister was introduced for use on all Dodge ISB powered pickups.
Fleetguard filter LF3885 was introduced and replaced the Fleetguard LF3349 oil filter on all model Dodge pickups equipped with the ISB (24-valve) engines. This filter features improved construction to better withstand the higher oil pressures seen on the ISB (24-valve) engine. LF3349 could be used on all non-ISB (12-valve) powered Dodges until the stock was depleted, at which time the LF3885 was to be used across-the-board on all Dodge applications.

I looked in our 2001 Fleetguard cross reference and found the 5016547AC filter that came on my new truck crosses over to the LF3959. Had no problem getting a case of 12 on our stock order. They are available and I now have lifetime supply !

I just purchased the Stratapore filters from my local Cummins dealer. 3894 & FS1268, they each were cheaper than I've seen posted so far.

What's the average price you guys are paying for the Stratapore 3894?

Also get my Premium Blue from them, but I'm thinking about switching to 76 Triton QLT 15W40 or their semi, 76 Trition Royal QLT 15W40.

Well here is what I got from my local Cummins NW parts dealer (2001 non HO):
1. Oil filter: LF3935 ($5. 57)(use LF3894 if you are using synthetic oil)
2. Fuel filter: FS1268 ($14. 13)
3. Air filter: AF25090 ($15. 16)

These prices reflect membership in Cummins Power Booster Club ($20 annually).

It's hard to believe all the variables involved with parts for this engine. Guess I'll have to go to Cummins Diesel School to get all the right answers.

RJOL, Good one. That's why Cummins South is telling me to stay with the 3894... . I use the Premium Blue 2000 Oil. I like it cause it's the Stratapore.

I thought there was a problem with the old oil filter blowing out also because of high oil pressure. I have one old filter left, and I've been afraid to use it. . .

Monkfarm,

I'm not an expert in this, but this is what I was told from Cummins. The oil filter for the 12V Cummins was LF3349. When the 24V came out, there was an increase in the oil pressure (surge) and a new filter, LF3885, was used. The LF3935 is the replacement for the LF3885 filter. Don't know why it was updated, but that is the current filter. The LF3894 (Stratapore) is the upgrade to the LF3935 but they only recommended it for those who use synthetic oil. The 3935 is the standard filter and will do the job as long as you change your oil at the recommended intervals. This filter stuff sure is fun, huh!.
