Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 2000 24V Cummins Stumbles

I have a 2000 Ram Cummins Automatic and on occasion the engine cuts out. It feels like you turned the ignition off and then back on real fast. It may do this once a week or it may go for two weeks before it does it again. I have put some additive in the fuel hoping that it may be a little water in the fuel but did not help. Does anyone have any ideas. Oo.

TSB 18-24-99 addresses engine stumble on some model year 2000 Rams.



Another cause of stumble (driver induced) is fingers accidentally hitting cruise control buttons.

I have the exact same problem you speak of. I have tried cleaning just about every electrical connection under the hood and putting them back together using dielectric grease, recalibrated TPS, done the TSB, checked fuel pressure, changed fuel filter. It doesn't happen as often now, but when it does and your a few hundred miles away from home, it kinda puts you on the edge of your seat thinking "What's Next". I just deal with it for now, unless someone has some new ideas for the cure.

C. Miller, curious what you found for fuel pressure. Sounds like symptoms of lift pump failure.

If it happens when you are taking off (foot in the accelerator pretty hard) and/or when you're making a left-hand turn, I vote for the lift pump.



I experienced what you were experiencing, checked pressures and learned the lift pump was bad. It wasn't even coming on (couldn't hear it run when the key was first turned on)

My fuel pressure is 13-14psi @ the injection pump while idling. I relocated the original lift pump near the fuel tank about a year ago. Before relocating the lift pump I had about 12psi under the same circumstances. This hesitation doesn't set off any codes either. I just put Optimas in the truck and cleaned the main engine grounds, so I'll see if that helps at all. The only other thing I can think of is to try disconnecting my Edge and Ottomind boxes to see if that cures it. But the hesitation only happens once every 1-2 months, and leaving the box/boxes off for that long would kinda suck!

I've seen this problem also... just driving down the road, usually at a steady speed, and it cuts out for a split second (pretty violent split second). I've also had the opposite occur... just driving down the road at a steady speed and get a violent surge in power. I wish I could make the latter happen any time I wanted it to.

Mine would stumble on a hard pull. when it did it would set the dreaded 0216 code. I finally had a new injector installed.
