i have a 2000 2500 automatic standard cab with 165,000 miles. i am currently looking at a second truck which is a 2002 3500 dually quad cab 6 speed. i ttest drove the newer truck (only 18,000 miles) and found that the rpm's at a given speed is about 120rpm's higher than the automatic. does anyone have input on this? can anyone advise on the downsides of a dually versus single wheel?
 
The only downside I know of is having to buy 2 more tires every now and then. More stable pulling trailers, more payload and more mass in case some ricer decides to hit you. The 6 speed is less maintenance intensive and will withstand a lot more power than the auto, and it probably has more power stock to start with. Plus, once you get used to that quad cab you'll wonder how you you got by with the standard cab.
 
Tire wise, the 265/75 is probably only 1/2 inch taller than the 235/85's on the dually (taller aspect ratio). And the cost isn't all that different either. I had six AT's installed on my 3500 for $740ish and my dad had four AT's installed on his 2500 for $710ish. For me, the added stability while pulling the trailer and the increased carrying capacity is worth it (a tenth of a cent per mile over 30,000 miles!).
 
Like these guys said, there won't be a huge difference in tire size. The difference may come from a difference in rear end gears or the fact that autos have a lower overdrive gear than the 6 speeds (. 69 as opposed to . 73) or a combonation of the two.
