I'm trying to replace the factory 7 way plug on my 2000 2500 with a standard aftermarket 7 way. I replaced this on my 96 dodge no problem. the 2000 has 8 wires going into the plug instead of 7. I desperatly need a wiring diagram if anyone knows of one.

Ok, I will help if I can. I do not know what the eighth wire is but I can tell how to wire the plug that plugs into the female socket that is on the vehicle side.

Looking at the plug that plugs into truck from your trailer or RV. Look at the plug with the locator pin straight up. Going counter clock wise the pin are: TAIL LIGHTS, LEFT TURN, GROUND, ELECTRIC BRAKES, RIGHT TURN, BATTERY, AND THE CENTER PIN IS FOR BACKUP LIGHTS

That adds up the 7 wires. I have no idea what the 8th wire may be used for. If you have a meter you should be able to back into the wiring. I wonder if they have a separate ground for the brakes. A very non educated guess. Good luck!! Let me know if you have other questions.

I know what the standard connections are but I need to know what the extra wire is. somebody said it goes to the computer and if it's not hooked up right it could fry the computer. I may call and ask the dealer tomorrow, but I'm sure there just going to tell me to get the factory plug at 8x the price

I'm confused! There are only seven pins on the female connector on the truck, six outside pins and one in the middle. What is the 8th wire connected to? Doesn,t make sense that a computer wire would be connected to the trailer. Why? But it is always better to be safe. I am really interested about the 8th wire. Let me know what they say.

the eighth wire on my truck is a ground. I think its cause the wires are all the same size when usually the ground is bigger to handle the load if u need i can take my plug apart and tell you what colors otherwise just use a tst light to find out. My truck the grounds are black check and see

I dont remember mine having eight. you can purchase an aftermarket plug that will plug right in to the factory wiring. it is pricy at 20 for the plug and 20 for the adapter harness. I got lucky and found a used factory plug at a local rv dealer for 20.

My truck has an 8th wire in the harness that doesn't go into the connector. It's a brake light wire that can be used for the center brake light in the camper shell.

all 8 of my wires go into the seven way round connector. I don't think it's a ground. I suppose I could take the connector apart and try to see where the extra wire goes.

I actually think your right, asked the dealer today and they were snobby and wouldn't show me the book, said I had to buy it, but they said they think it's the ground. there's two black wires so those must be grounds. the other wires I can figure out with my test light. thanks.

I bought a stock replacement OE plug from my local Dodge dealer for about 20 bucks. It plugged right into the original rectangle truck wireing. They could not seem to find it in the books but, one of the parts guys knew where it was on the shelf.

hey thanks, that's a life saver. I won't even have to use the test light now.

Plug Pin Out

I just replaced mine. Didn't want to go through the hassle of indentifying every wire's purpose so instead I matched to color wires to the pins. Seemed easier and worked perfect. I've attached my rather crude diagram. The diagram basicly show which color wire goes to which pin. Hope this helps. This is for a 2001 with the tow package.
