i am going to look at a truck this weekend and it is from california. what are the major differences with the california engines. how much less power does it have. is there any things that i should look for that is different from a regular engine. thanks for your help. it is a 2500 reg cab. 4x4 auto 80k

I'm from California, purchased my truck in California last year, but the truck was originally purchased in Idaho, thus the HO. In a nut shell, it will be a standard output with about 235 hp vs. 245hp for the High output. If you want to bomb the truck, I have been told numerous times that the SO is better, I think they actually have bigger injectors than the HO. It's just a better platform to bomb.

I believe it was 2004 when the HO became 50 state certified.

Model year 2000 California Rams & non-California Rams were advertised with the same horsepower/torque - 235/460 for either manual transmission and 215/420 for the automatic transmission. Cummins/Rams manufactured for sale in California model year 2000 will show emissions - California NO CHARGE on their window stickers.

The model year 2000 parts catalog shows the following ECM's:

p/n 35333930 automatic transmission w/Federal Emissions MODULE, Engine Controller

p/n 35343030 automatic transmission w/California Emissions MODULE, Engine Controller

p/n 35343130 manual transmission w/Federal Emissions MODULE, Engine Controller

p/n 35343230 manual transmission w/California Emissions MODULE, Engine Controller

Other than the Engine Control Modules, I'm not aware of any engine differences California vs. non-California.

The automatic transmission 2500's will also have a Dana 70 rear axle vs. the Dana 80 rear axle of other Cummins/Rams.

Window stickers on some model year 2000 Cummins/Rams show incorrect GCWR's. The correct numbers follow:

Either manual transmission - 20,000 pounds

Automatic transmission w/3. 54 differential - 16,000 pounds

Automatic transmission w/4. 10 differential - 18,000 pounds

The High Output Cummins first appeared in model year 2001 Rams. It was sold in all fifty states and was only available with the 6-speed transmission. The GCWR did not increase if a truck was equipped with the HO engine. The horsepower/torque was advertised as 245/505.

In model year 2001 the Standard Output Cummins horsepower/torque was advertised as 235/460 with both manual and automatic transmissions.
