At about 1500 to 2000 miles, my engine seemed to get louder. I guess that this must be the valve train. Is this normal? Will it get louder? Also, I hear that the engine goes through breakin stages up to 10000 miles with the computer changing timing and pump timing. Is this correct? Thanks.

When you say it's getting louder, do you mean the clatter, exhaust sound, or an air sucking sound? Trying to fully understand your question.

Ya know I remember when mine was new (quiet-ish) and I think about 5,000 miles later I noticed the more (normal---ish) sound of the valve train/pump noise that to me indicated all parts were starting to "mesh". The old addage: Not'in spells trouble like a quiet diesel. DAD's Theory: H3ll the louder they get the "younger" they become..... diesel motors age gracefully. #ad

Mine seemed to go through a stage like that. Then I started using Stanadyne and about two tanks after that it really quietened down. I think the noise was low grade fuel though. Whatever it is, it will getter better with age. Cummins told me that the break in on the computer is really not there. It just seems that way. I would like to get a straight answer though. If they do the step changes based on mileage, maybe they will let this hoss go at 100,000 miles when the warranty is up.

I know what you mean about the noise level changes. It seems to me that my truck makes more engine clatter when the outside air temperature is cold (below 20F).

I've got over 1700 miles on mine and it's getting loader. I have been testing fuel in my area and It seemed to get loader when I put Amoco in it. The mileage keeps going up, last tank 19. 8 on Mobil. Noise is not a bad thing. My neighbor leaves their bedroom window open all year long, heat pump runs 24/7. Since the TD moved in, the window is closed in the morning. Gotta love that warm up period... ...

Nice to see someone else hear the same thing that I've heard... . I have about 11500 miles and at about 8000 I could hear more drive train noise. It is louder when the engine is cold, after it warms it's not near as noticeable. My oil samples all came back at normal for the mileage so I'm not going to worry about it unless it gets louder than it is now.

I have noticed , because I do a lot of hwy driving, that most noise is road noise. Like when you come on to a patch of road that is fairly new, how quiet everything gets. One other thing is lubricity additive; I use the Cummins primium/plus lubricity and injector cleaner on a regular basis and notice a definite difference in how the engines and injector pump hum with and without it. I have just a little over 50k on mine. Diesel fuel is like a box of chocolates. Just couldn't resist that.
P. S. Another thing, these engines were made to work, before you can make any rationalizations the engine has to be at full operating temp and they are not like the gassers we are use to driving every day. You have to drive them at least 10-20 miles at a sustained rate before thier juices really begin to flow. Constant short trips less that 5-10 miles only help to build carbon deposits and foul injectors. If you drive it to work every day and it's less than 5-10 mi. in stop and go traffic your doing it a disservice, leave it at home and drive your gasser; I know everyone has one as a standby, I do. Do your truck a favor and run the pi$$ out of it, take it for "long" Sunday drives.

Hey, Eagle, one other thing. You are about the reach the point of the first oil change (I assume). If you are still running the "new" oil, that may be causing some of your noise. Just a thought. I seem to remember after my first oil change at around 2500 miles, mine quietened down a good bit.

These engines sure do sound different depending on the temperature and fuel you use. They are louder when cold because the ECM retards the injection timing to improve combustion until the engine warms up. The fuel problem exists because there are few standards for diesel fuel in this country. This will change soon. The 2 major fuel related causes of engine noise are low cetane rating and low lubricity. Some fuels have low cetane and good lubricity and vice versa. You can tell the difference with your ear. The noise that sounds like rocks being tumbled in a dryer is influenced by the cetane rating of the fuel (this is ignition knock, which is normal in a diesel). The other noise that sounds something like someone hitting your engine block with a hammer (dunk, dunk, dunk) is the injection pump. This noise is influenced by the lubricity of the fuel. If you add a pure cetane booster like Amsoil's, you can reduce the ignition knock. If you add Cummin's fuel additive, which improves lubricity but does not boost cetane, the injection pump noise will be quieter. Many available diesel fuel supplements such as Power Service, LE, etc. , boost both cetane and lubricity and will noticeably quite down an engine that is running of poor quality fuel.

Yeah RankRam, I find that they have the best fuel in the area also. I always seem to get the best mileage and performance with their fuel. I think it is Phillips 76 diesel. I now use the new Power Service additive all the time in the winter and every other tank full the rest of the year. It definitely quiets the engine a bit.

I not only fish pyramid, but part of my research is on Lahontan cutthroats. Look for my green and silver Ram at the ramp on Saturday. They have indeed been hot in the shallows early and late.

Thanks for the reply, I also use Power Service been pleased with the results. Lee do you fish Pyramid Lake? If so look for a red ram down just south of the nets were catching some hogs. We will be there this Friday-Saturday.
