Well, we're done talking and I've been driving it for 2 weeks. Got a lot to learn but interesting so far. Think I need to inspect the intake manifold and then the VNT section of the turbo to see if its sticking. Met up with some www.tdiclub.com guys last weekend. WOW in a few minutes I got a correction to the dealer installed timing belt tension and PUMP TIMING with a VAG COM imrepressivly simple in skilled hands. The guys under the hood are TDI Guru's and helping a Newbie big time.

Go ahead take your best shot at my 40,000 mile YELLOW Bug, I'm suprized I bought it too but the mileage and powertrain sold it, not the Hi-Viz Yellow. Oh yeah, its a 5 speed too and tires are only 2 years old. The Fleet picture is almost 400,000 miles as a group, all manuals.

Mileage, so far 45 MPG and might get a bit better yet.

Congrats. You should/will be able to do better than 45 mpg. We get 48-50 in our 99. 5 Jetta (same era TDI) with 150 K on the odometer, stock computer settings, and that's no matter how hard we drive it.

Thanks guys. Got a lot to learn and expect to find a bit of crud in the intake manifold and most likely a stuck VNT system. They used the VAG COM and a vacuum pump to narrow it to the variable ain't varying no more,I'll find out. Funny thing I've seen 3 yellow Bugs this week on the roads. The ventectomy added a lot of range already.

Simplysmn,

I signed up on tdiclub already, incredibly active seems like a bunch of code speaking enthusasists, lots to learn. Not giving up on the Dodge, just putting the miles and using less fuel in the VW.

Gary

Congrats Gary. My first diesel was an 85 Golf and I absolutely loved it. Been keeping an eye out for an older tdi to run around in, mostly back and forth to work to replace my pos 99 blazer. They are hard to find around here. Found an 02 Jetta yesterday listed in an estate sale, 200k+ for 3200 obo. Ive left 2 messages so far and no return calls, don't want to sound TOO desperate :-laf but would like to at least go take a looksie.

DFL,

Good luck finding one, I sorta stumbled on this one so far it's cut my fuel $ in half.

Right now it's in the surgery suite, intake manifold de gunking and tomorrow the Ex manifold comes off and then turbo VNT cleaning, it's stuck. This should be fun, yeah right. Amazing how dirty I can get on a simple intake manifold. That EGR gunk is nasty.

See this thread, Gary. Maybe you have seen the videos already but kkellys comment regarding the turbo sounds like yours.

Mike.

Mike, mine was gunked up but not that bad, it's off and waiting for the VNT cleaning. Still struggling with the oil supply tube nut, might get sacrificed in order to remove EX manifold and turbo.

Gary

Congratulations. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I'm enjoying my Jetta Sportwagen. The numbers of VW TDI owners among TDR members are growing.

Harvey,

I'm seeing beetles all over the place, kind scary.

My TDI is in sick bay, getting the intake manifold cleaned and the big one the VNT was stuck. I just got the vane housing out tonight, quite a piece. Now a bit more cleaning and the reassembly starts. So far just gaskets and that darned oil feed line.

Thinking about putting a boost gage on it as a monitor.

Copy that on the bolts, but how about those low slung oil pans? I get to R&R mine tomorrow, had a disagreement with my own driveway, dummy me.

pete,

Where were you this weekend, needed some help. I had to take it off and RESEAL the pan, my error I believe and I added n aluminum skid plate, called a Panzer Plate about . 2" thick. Those oil pans are so common, Dorman has them.

I need some Farfegnugen to come out of this Bug, tired of being under it.

Gary

Back when they were new, Lawrence (Diesel Dynamics) bought one and did a set of injectors for it. Dyno HP went up from 77 to 97 HP, mpg still good.

You are a victim of NUGCS. AKA "Neglected Used German Car Syndrome". :D

The only cure is time, patience and small piles of cash.

I too have been a victim of NUGCS, but fought it and won. Gizmo took a lot of my time the first few months of ownership but it did finally settle in and you can simply start and drive the thing everyday.

Everytime that I fill up and hand calculate 39-42mpg it is all worth it.

Joe,

I'm on a TDI forum, those guys are clear cut wacky about mods and such. what else is interesting is the volume of posts per day on the VW forum vs. TDR, we almost know everyone by name here, no way overthere. Also the DSG is not making friends with all of the owners either.

Mike,

It was a tough week, did a Wrangler clutch install and video, got home, helped a neighbor pull an A/T (yuck) out of a Trailblazer on our backs, then spent almost all day yesterday under da Bug pulled pan and determined I didn't seat one end correctly I think I took the Ultra Grey directions too seriously and didn't snug it up enough on the first tightening, saw a ugly contact pattern from the grey, cleaned off and started over. Now we're tackling another Jeep to fix a agressive release load not sure why, we'll figure it out.

Ready for a break, and BTW for me its 43MPG.
