2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission 2001 2500 knuckles on 1999 front axle (Dana 60)?

Hi,



The question I have is can you install knuckles outward 2001 onto a 1999 axle or are there other differences besides the brakes and I believe the ball joints are different but since they install in the knuckle I would imagine it shouldn't make a difference



Also is the center section of the axle the same between years (2000-2001 vs. 1994-1999) other than shock mounts and size of control arm bushing bolts (I know 2002 is missing the CAD) (I know the shafts are different inner splines as well 32 vs. 30)

Nope. Ball joints are smaller in the '01. You could possibly have them machined, or else use Ford steering knuckles and spindles, doing a locking hub kit... ... I'd have to go look, but I think the bores are also smaller in the axle tube yokes where the ball joints go in on the '01.

Center section is basically the same, aside bolt holes, including shock mounts, IIRC. CAD became an option in 2001 on some trucks. Some 2002 trucks have it, some don't. Those that don't have it, have the 32spline.

Being I am a modifier of front axles, I have to ask... Why?

The problem with the OEM axles in GEN II is the weak drivers side axles (Dana 44 sized) and the 2 piece CAD operated passenger side axle. I have extensively modified my 97 front Dana 60 but never had any problems with the ball joints, knuckles etc.

The ball joints are considerably larger in the early second gens, too..... Later models have chronic problems with larger tires or extensive off road use, where the ball joints fail at a rather rapid pace... somewhat similar to the AAMs in the newer trucks.....



My thought would be to use a Ford steering knuckle and spindle, along with their hub assembly and floating bearings..... Quite a bit stronger that way, with the benefit of locking hubs. I've seen two guys do it, and two guys here on TDR have done it... JMMcCoy is one, IIRC.....

Makes sense, the main requirement is axle tube OD vs knuckle ID. . and the knuckle ID could be enlarged as they would already be separated from their original axle tubes. I would assume you would go back with a set of 1. 5" one piece axles?

Its not difficult to swap knuckles. I recently narrowed a D44 for a jeep project. Take you time. . measure. . measure and measure some more. Buy a good Starrett angle finder.

The steering set up is also different on the 00-02 models compared to 99 and earlier. I had a 00 and it was alot more probematic in that area than my 98. The upside is the slip on rotors and dual piston calipers, I hate dealing with my pressed on rotors.

That's pretty high in my opinion. If the inner knuckles came with them, it would be a decent deal. But looks like it's outters only.

You don't need the inner knuckles. It is a direct bolt on. The listing also has an option to make an offer. Who knows, he may take half that. Besides, it is the only option we currenty have for a front brake upgrade. It's like a 2 for 1 deal. LOL. 00-02's can upgrade to 2010 brakes.

I don't think that was too terrible bad. I can find it cheaper, but I've got access to several bone yards.... I'd have come home with the whole axle assembly, probably...

Still, if you wanted to upgrade to the bigger calipers and free spin hubs, it's a good start. Problem there, is you'll also have to gather up the spindles, bearings, and hubs....

hi,

yeah the thought was to upgrade the brakes, but i may just swap a intire 01 under it as I want a gear swap too, but will be needing front wheel bearings soon so was thinking doing a Ford conversion on the 01 knuckles and then swap the gears later, as I dont have enough to do the rear just yet, although now I am in the mist of doing a head gasket and arp stud upgrade so this all may wait for a bit.

What other changes were there to the steering, will 99 tie rods, etc. on a 01 axle and out of curiosity will 01 tire rods and etc work on a 99 axle?
