Looking at replacing my faithfull old '98 (A/C is shot along with third gear syncros). Found a really nice 2001 that suit me perfect except for the 4. 10's. Personally I don't have any experience with this arrangement. My old man's 2001 auto has 3. 54's and pull's great, not to mentions cruising calmly at 75. A couple questions

1. Are 4. 10 gears in a auto good or bad (mainly highway driving empty)

2. What kinda milage to expect?

Thanks

i personally like my 3. 54 alot better than 4. 10s for pulling with my auto and i realy like bieng able to go 80 at 2000 rpm.

if you plan on alot of highway miles ... ... . DO NOT go with 4. 10s ... ... . i dread the interstate with my truck

my 2 cents

I have 4. 10's and since i put on my 33's its not that bad doing 70 on the freeway. Atleast not as bad as people make it to be. The good thing is driving around town with an aftermarket turbo becomes a bit quicker to spool with 4. 10's. Atleast thats what ive been told. So if i had to by a truck again and it happen to have 4. 10's in it, Would i buy it? Yes.

Only get 4. 10's if you plan on towing heavy most of the time. For better MPG you have to stay below 2000RPM.

4. 10 - 2000RPM = 67MPH

3. 54 - 2000RPM = 77MPH

I have a '01 with 4. 10's and an Auto, I love it. Still running 265's with and Im getting about 17. 5 mpg on the highway unloaded. Towing 5k, about 13-14. 5mpg. Im getting some 285's with in the next couple of weeks, so it will help highway mileage.

I don't think I'm going to get it. I'll just keep looking, or fix the A/C in my tuck. Most of my time is on the Highway, and although 17mpg is about as good as I can get in my current set-up I would much prefer the 3. 54.

Thanks for the responses.

Yep my 4:10's seem to make the bigger turbo spool better for the in town driving. I really like it as I pull a 5k lawn trailer daily. But for better mpg's and higher speeds on the open road the 3 range is better
