Warning From DC About Remote Starters

My truck has 11,000 miles on it. While getting a vb, tc, ez box, Pac Brake, and Smart Box installed last week at DTT, Bill Kondolay showed me that every blade of the turbo was chewed. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem? Fortunately it's under warranty. Still, I feel pretty lucky that no metal sucked into the motor. Also, just in case there's somebody out there (like me) who hasn't bothered to take off the stock air filter for a looksee... . nuf said.

I checked mine when I replaced the front shocks at 7,000 - no problem. If I remember correctly there was another post a few months ago with the same subject. I would demand a replacement if it were my truck. Those blades spin incredibly fast so any imbalance is not good imo.

If your turbo compressor blades are chewed or
damaged by foreign objects that were injested through your air cleaner, you will
probably be denied warranty. Foreign object
damage is not a turbo fault. The turbo mfg.
will void it,but if you are lucky maybe DC will accept it.

I got lucky, the dealership is going to warranty it. My truck has the smaller turbo. The 2001 1/2 trucks have the bigger one. No Chrysler folks are not fessing up if in fact there is a problem with the smaller ones, but there must've been? I tried to get them to give me a bigger turbo, even if it means paying a little more for it but they wouldn't.
It's possible that part of the original casting broke off even before it was delivered to the dealership. I'm just glad they're taking care of it.

Chris, are you saying that your blades are chewed also? Is our truck a 2001? How many miles? Hopefully, the dealership won't give you any hassles. The one that I went to is Larson Dodge in Puyallup, WA. They did not question how it happened at all. They had to order the new turbo. It took a week to get it fixed, but they set me up with a loaner vehicle at their cost.

Sig, mine too is a 2001. 5 ETC with the crappy small turbo. I sent you an e-mail to get your phone number to talk more about it and if you had any hassels. Get a hold of me if you would. Chris

If the blades are chewed up, what happened to the metal it spit out???????

Might be worth MAKING them do a compression check on all cylinders. Find out what is normal before accepting their answer as good enough. Good luck.

Chris, I sent you an e-mail. Look forward to hearing from you.
Chad, thanks, that's a good idea. I have not received my paperwork from Dodge(computer was down)for whatever work they did. I'll check with them tomorrow to see if they did a compression check, if not, I'll get it done.

Sig,

You may want to ask for a new CAC as well. It could be harboring some shrapnel. Would check the hoses as well to make sure they are clean.

I think it stands for Cold Air Charger.

The intercooler.

I agree with the above. The dealer needs to pull the intercooler and clean it out to make sure no metal is left in there which can later be sucked into the engine (if it already has not). Also do not forget to have all the charged air hoses, etc. cleaned. Don't know if they will do the compression test but I would make a point of your concern of turbo fin metal having been sucked into the engine and if need file a report with DC. This could be one of those cases where no appearent damage is noticable now, but later down the road it could show up as needing a premature engine rebuild after the warranty has expired.

Any insight on what caused the problem in the first place? What was the turbo shaft's lateral and end play, or did they check? Could the bearings of been bad and caused the blades to rub the compressor housing?

How do you tell if you have the large or small turbo?

Not to be picky, but I believe CAC stands for charge air cooler.

Looks like I get to join the club. Went out to inspect my turbo this morning and discovered that the tips of the blades on my compressor wheel have been making contact with the housing. There are very faint but discernable marks on the housing as well as the tips/edges of a couple of blades. My truck just turned 11,500 miles.

Couldn't find any pieces of aluminum, I will be checking the hoses later this afternoon. This must be a feature of the new and improved HY35.

The Cummins tech line told me it shouldn't be a major problem if caught early. The tiny pieces of aluminum, if they make it past the Charge Air Cooler, should blow through the motor and would be unlikely to cause damage to pistons, cylinder walls or valves.

Now I get to have the pleasure of dealing with the DC warranty/service people. Should be very interesting.

Just got off the phone with a nearby Dodge dealer, they said they had one in December and DC (STAR) authorized a new engine. I'll believe that when I see one. I am going to drop my truck off on Thursday so they can inspect the turbo and go from there.

Dave D, sorry to hear that you're part of the club. I'm definately interested in what you find out. I'm going to discuss with the Dodge dealership again and take it from there. I still haven't gotten my paperwork back for the new turbo install, but I don't believe they checked anything else.
Hopefully, if I was successful today in creating my signature, it should provide a picture link to show turbo damage.
