One question with you guys and your turbos? I just got mine a couple weeks ago and am curious about the turbo size. How can you tell which one you have. I would have to guess I have the small one because of the auto transmission??

WOOOOO, HOLD THE PHONE!!! If memory serves me correctly, our (Dodge) turbo supplier just relocated to Mexico. They had some clearance problems between the blades and the housing wall once they did this due to a lack of bench testing or something. They did get the problem fixed however. I know this because we get some turbos at CAT from these yahoos at Holset also. I will try to find out all the info tomarow. In the mean time, I urge everyone who has trucks built around the time these guys did to check their turbo blades.

Tom C and NDRamrod, to answer your question about turbo size, since I asked the same question when I first joined the TDR and got my truck:

The ETH motor (HO or High Output), which comes only with the DEE (6 speed manual) transmission has the HX35 turbo, and if I remember correctly, a 12 cm housing.

The ETC motor (non-HO motor), which you can get with the 5 speed (maybe the 6 speed also) or the auto trannies, comes with an HY35 turbo, and if I remember correctly, a 10 cm housing.

Honestly not sure of the differences between the HX35 and HY35 turbos though.

Tom

Sig,

I just looked at your pictures. Wow! Feels like being kicked in the nads. My turbo isn't any where near that chewed up.

Here is an update on my situation. I didn't find any metal on either side of the CAC. All of the blades on the compressor wheel have a burr on the side of the blade that faces away from the direction of rotation. It almost looks like the burr that you would see on an old fashion cabinet scraper. The type you put an edge on by rounding over. The burrs are very rough, I ran the tip of a q-tip over them and they would snag quite a bit. The burr is coincident with the section of the blade that is closest to the shoulder on the housing. Also the trailing edge of the housing is very rough in several places and looks like some material has been removed. It looks like something came loose and bounced around in there. There have been reports of small pieces of the housing casting breaking off.

I don't have a lot of experience looking at turbos; however, I can't believe they are supposed to look like this after 11. 5k. I am going to try to get it to the dealer sometime late this week or early next week. I spent quite a bit of time on the phone with the Sevice Manager, he went out of his way to get more information and even called me back when he said he would.

I am going to try to grab some video tomorrow and convert it to some digital images if I have time.

I am going to try to get info from DC tomorrow. Hopefully, I will get ahold of an e-mail address that I can forward pictures to and see what they think. I'll let you know. Thanks to everyone for all the info. Pretty eye opening stuff. Chris, John, Chad, please let us all know what else you find out.

Thats incorrect for some I am sure, I have a 2000 ETC/AT and an HX35W Turbo. I don't know the size of the housing.

I called Cummins yesterday. The person that I talked to said that the pieces of metal probably passed right through the motor as they were very small. If there was any metal still in the motor it would be stuck in a valve, causing the engine to miss. It's possible that there may still be fragments in the Charged Air Cooler.
When I first asked him if he has heard of this type of problem with the turbo before, he said "we hear about it all the time" but quickly switched to "well, from time to time". He said it is very possible that part of the casting broke loose from the turbo housing or the manifold before it left the factory. Cummins doesn't warranty this.
I received the invoice yesterday from the Dodge dealership that replaced my turbo. They are obviously concerned with their "Five Star Rating" as they put a sticker on the invoice that says "You will receive a questionnaire from Daimler Chrysler in the next few days. If for any reason you cannot grade us "Completely Satisfied" please contact our service manager. " I will talk to the Dodge Dealership today about having them check the CAC for debris and the cylendar walls for scarring.
