I have a 6 week old 2001 4 x 4 2500HD QC, 3:55's and automatic and have yet to get an answer to the first question I had about this truck. It is equipped with cab clearance lights, however, they are the old style "high profile" type found on pre 99 trucks. It was next to another 2001 on the lot in Nebraska, this truck also had cab clearance lights, but they were the new "low profile" type. I asked the dealer about it and received the answer "they just come both ways". Since that day I have seen one other 2001 with the "high profile" lights all the others have had the newer "low profile" lights. It's not a big deal but what the heck is Chrysler doing?

Burning up inventory...

The early 80's Fords were notorious for this... you'd see mismatched steering wheels, seats, etc... It's a little strange since I thought the hole sizes required in the roof were slightly different for the different style lights. I would think they could've written off the old style lights to E&O (excess and obsolete) and still have saved money by not forcing the extra manual labor required to "think" and change tools while installing the lights on a single model year.

Go figure... .

They might have sent all the old inventory to one of the two assembly plants. Was yours made in Mexico? Mine has the "low profile" lights and was assembled in St Louis

Just a thought. The Mopar accessory cab light kits come with the old style lights. Even the kits for the newer trucks(99+) come with the old style high profile lights. Maybe the lights were dealer added. Take a light off and look at the size of the wire hole. If it is big hole(about 1 inch), then they were factory installed. If the wire hole is small(about1/4 inch with a grommet), then the lights were dealer added.

As far as I can tell they are factory installed (big wire holes and appear on factory window sticker)and the truck was built in St. Louis.

If you have the large holes already cut in the cab, the lense covers can be changed. At least it worked on mine...

I don't have the part numbers for the newer style with me, but I think I have them at home. If you want to e-mail me I'll see if I can get it for you.

Does anyone have photos showing the difference? I have 'em, but I'm not sure which (low or high).

So what is with the cab lights anyway? (Serious questions) Are these required for certain types of loads, GVW, trailer lengths etc? Why do the large trucks all have them? Is there any case where a pickup truck requires them? Or are they just a "looks cool" type of thing? Are all 3500's provided with them?

You can see by my signature that I don't really like them, but mean no offense to those of you who do. #ad

Dunno the "official" answers to your questions, I ordered the cab lights on mine (my most important option!) just because I love them.

Love the Sound and Smell of Diesel(Not just my truck but locomotives as well)

Because I haul absolutely nuthing nor do I tow. My truck is a pure "fun" truck.

I consider my truck "rare" as not too many regular cab 3/4 tons running around like mine #ad
least not that I know of.

As far as I know they don't have any real reason. I like them for the simple fact that I pull a 40' deck gooseneck trailer and they sure seem to deter people from pulling out in front of you in the middle of the night. (neat feature when you are loaded doing 55 - 60 mph on a 2 lane highway - I guess people think it is a big truck coming at them - scares them and makes them think before pulling out). I have notices the difference our 1997 & 2001 have cab clearance lights and our 1998 doesn't (seems like people are more likely to pull out in front of the 1998).

Yes I have cab clearance lites from the factory on my truck too. I am so fond of them and I love them too. Yes mine truck is very rare around here I am soooooo fond of my truck and the noise it makes.

For the several years I coveted a Ram but couldn't afford one (still can't! #ad
), I always thought I'd want the cab lights. When it came time to order it, I actually had second thoughts, but I did get them. I'm glad I did. I really like the look of them, and I know I would have regreted it if I wouldn't have gotten them. I guess I like the big truck look they give. To quote ski bum, it's a "looks cool" thing for me. #ad

Folks, the cab lights are a DOT requirement on vehicles 1 ton and over (just like the extra markers on the dually's- side and rear. They are just an "option" on the 3/4 ton trucks; it's a safety item for some, fun for others, and clutter for a few..... I expect the variation is vendor supply inconsistancy. J.

I am soooooo happy for you that you are soooooo fond of your truck. More power to ya.

Its a shame not everyone enjoys their truck as much as you do.

Next time you try mocking someone try to do a lil bit better job or at least make it a bit more entertaining to read.

Fact is I love my job, and get paid to do something I love, can't beat that.

Do I post alot? Yes! Lets jsut say I utilize the website to the best of my ability. I do I have alot to say... . I suppose and enjoy the TDR more then your "average" diesel nut.

Always up for a good discussion, what other attempts can you take at bashing me? Nuthing good yet... ... .
