Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 2001 CTD Alternator

My alternator is starting to go on a 2001 2500 CTD. My mechanic is a Dodge diesel mechanic friend who was checking something else out. He said it should be replaced before it goes on me. Geno's only has rebuild kits and Bob said not to get one at a parts store because they probably came from China. A Dodge dealer would charge an arm and a leg and I thought trying TDR someone on it may know of a good new alternator source. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes , I would not get an alternator from the parts store. I have had several rebuilt for $50 and some change on cummins engines. Denso units and they come out looking like brand new. If there's a shop that rebuilds electrical components local to you I'd go that route.
