I'm psyched. After posting in this weekend on what I thought was a failing / failed lift pump, I find out that I'm flat wrong. Began the day by calling DC roadside assistance (nice folks), then the local dealer to let them know it (truck) was on the way. The flatbed arrived, we loaded my 2001 with less than 15,000 miles, then proceeded to the dealership. I handed over the recall notice for the lift pump and was assured that it would be taken care of. Fast forward six hours... Verdict: dead injection pump, yes, the $3,500 variety. What gives? I run Stanadyne every single tank, changed the fuel filter at 10,000, never had a water problem or any indication that the unit was suffering. The dealership has called DC and is waiting for the replacement pump. I'd love to know what went went wrong inside.
Is Bosch skimping?

They once asked Neil Armstrong what was it like to ride the Apollo 11. He said, "well, its just 15,000 parts all built by the lowest bidder". #ad

The electronic fuel pump in my wife's Jeep just did the same thing. Fortunately, when dealing with electric pumps running continuously at high speeds, the failures tend to occur early in the life cycle while they are still under warranty.

Hes not joking, thats how much a Dodge Dealer will want to charge you for a new injection pump. I checked on it once just for grins, and found out I could get a new one for $1250 if I needed it.

Doug Hatfield took his truck to the dealer, they tried to tell him his pump was shot and they want $3200 I think it was, he took it to Cummins and they said it was fine and bled some air out of his system and good as new... ... ...

And the dealer he took it to was "supposed" to be the "good" dealer around here.

I lost mine at 12,000 miles and cost me almost $1800 for a new injection pump from the dealer.

When I did mine it would have been $2400 installed from my dealer. I brought it to Cummins instead. I'm pretty sure it was $1600 installed. Just be glad it's under warranty. #ad

Hi Cheska,
Did you happen to notice any difference in the sound coming from your engine and injection pump? Did it change some time prior to the failure? I believe that I have a very keen sense of hearing. (Selective hearing that is) I believe that my pump is making a much different sound for the last two tanks from different stations, much more "metallic". I do not believe it to be the fuel. I also use a good quality additive and cetane enhancer and am aware as to the difference in sounds the engine makes when I use summer fuel, very noticable. Comments?

Kraut and all responders. Truck is back on the road. I have to admit that I'm shocked that any dealership could move this fast, but I'm rolling again. My hat's off to them. The truck went in on the flatbed early Wed. ,and they called me Friday afternoon to tell me that it was ready. Shazzam! From what I gather, DC wasn't too psyched about having to shell out the $2,000 for the pump (service manager says that's the cost of a new one), so DC is having Bosch rip it down to find out what the hell went wrong. The dealership replaced the lift pump as well. Actually, it was after replacing it and finding that the engine still wouldn't start, that they realized it was the culpret. I agree with what someone mentioned above, referring specifically to the lack of pressure to the inj. pump as being a possible cause. There was no real warning that it was bad (inj. pump). The only warning I got was when I was cranking up this mile + grade; and it was like the engine just went "flat" at about 2400 rpm. It felt a lot like what happens when you run too low an octane in a turbocharged engine at high revs. The next thing I knew it was cycling between 400 and 800 rpm, and would not stop until I blipped the throttle. It did this every time I pushed in the clutch. The new lift pump is much more quiet than the old one. I noticed that immediately upon turning the key. I just want to say that there appears to be at least one good service dept. for these trucks, and if anyone needs some emergency warranty work done, don't fear Hilltop Dodge here in CT. That said, I would buy a anything from them, as they will not deal.

Above should read "I wouldn't buy anything from them". I can't even think straight tonight. It's so nice to have my truck back in the garage.

Oh, and Kraut, I too, really listen to my engine, so much so that I almost never turn on the radio (drive's my wife nuts). At no time did I hear any change in pitch from either of the pumps. Scary. My brother-in-law drives a new powerchoke and can't stand the "racket" in the cab from the engine under full load. I say: "loser!", there's nothing sweeter than pulling grades with a bed full of freshly cut wood, piled to the roof line, along with a 372XP (28"bar) laying on top for all to see. I digress.
