I have just changed the fuel filter on my 2001 for the first time... . kudos to Cummins for finally simplifying this task. I do have one concern though. I really had to crank on the ratchet to get the top of the filter housing to break loose. I was using a six point socket and still scarred the edges of the "nut" on top of the filter housing a little trying to get it loose. Is there a trick to this that I am missing and does some one know what the torgue specification is for the top of the fuel filter houseing? It sure does seem like that was way too tight for a plastic filter houseing.

Here is my experience with model year 2000—2001 is probably the same:

Torque is 25 foot-pounds MAXIMUM. This implies that less will work. On my first replacement the cap leaked at 25 foot-pounds and didn't leak after reducing torque.

You may find a clear material (lacquer???) has been sprayed in the area of the filter/water separator. I found it necessary to carefully scrape this material from the mating surfaces of the cap and the filter housing.

Put a little fuel on the o-ring and threads before you replace the cap.

JW,

I changed mine about three weeks ago and mine was tight too. But I got it off o. k. with the 1 1/8 6pt. socket. when I put the lid back on all I did was put a bit of 15w40 oil on the O ring and tightened down until snug. I did not have a torque wrench with me so I just snugged it good. On the cap it will have the MAX torque which is 25 ft. lbs. Mine not near that tight and no leaks so far.

Make sure you've completely drained the bowl and inspected it for contaminents, TSB about the fingers of the H20 in fuel sensor needing to be wiped off (lint free of course) if vehicle exposed to contaminated fuel.
25ftlbs
oil o ring w/ clean engine oil
1 1/8" Six point
Understand how to prime your system

Good Luck

Max

I really appreciate the info everyone... . even if I do feel a little stupid knowing that the torgue is listed on the top of the filter housing... . Oh well live and learn. Thanx all

Mad Max - thanks for the advice -"Make sure you've completely drained the bowl and inspected it for contaminents... " I changed mine a while back and it was about the easiest thing I've ever done - but how stupid of me to not drain the bowl. It looked great - but will do so the next time.
