Hi All, am nearing 2000mi on my 2001 2500HD reg cab 6spd and after calculating fuel mileage yesterday #ad
began to think selling my 1994 2500 Ram Diesel might have been a mistake. The 94 consistently delivered 22-23 mpg with my Leer Cab height camper and a TON (actual weight) in the bed. Both trucks are equiped with 3. 54 rear gears the '94 had 245 tires and the 2001 has 265s. Mileage was calculated using miles traveled divided by fuel added and was 16. 4 . The 2001 does have towing mirrors #ad
and cab lights. Could that be the difference, or shall I just get used to the poorer mileage. The HP and Torque of the 2001 are great and the Truck seems to beg to be driven fast, I'm not doing that though 'cause I want to be fair in compairing the two trucks.

------------------

The '94 of course had 12 and the 2001 has 24. I do think the 24 valver is a bit quieter, but that could just be better insulation in the truck. #ad
The six speed also took care of the hole between 3rd and 4th.

Dave, takes time to break these work horses in. Towing helps alot. The ole "99" started with lower fuel mileage and worked its way up (around 18 to start and at 56K I was between 20 and 21 mpg). The "01" is starting with low numbers, in the 16's and I have been as high as the mid 18's in its short 3000 miles of service. Its first tow won't be for another two weeks and it will have about as many miles on it as the "99" did when I started to tow with it. I remember someone posting about a year ago that Cummins said 50K before the 24V engines were considered broke in.

Dezul Doug; timing boxes = 2 - 3 mpg increase? #ad
Maybe by the de-liar puter' on the overhead. Most folks are seeing . 5 to maybe a 1 mpg increase. Some don't even see that. On the "99" with the original VA CPC I saw an initial . 5 - . 75 mpg increase.

Bottom line, if all hoses are tight, etc, time and use will help you mileage. Be patient.

Thanks to all. I like the 24 valver and some features of the new truck better, but the fuel mileage really bites. I'll be hooking it up later this month for the first loaded run. I do know that a ton in the back is no test of it's power. If I don't begin to see some increase then I look to some of the aftermarket devices for help #ad

My 99 has 25K on it now(was 23 last weekend lol). I drove to Cuba, MO empty last week running 80 the whole way and got about 16. 5. . kinda lame but thats not exactly flat terrain. Came home with a 24' Classic Trailer(4600lbs) running 80 90% of the time and got 12. But this weekend ran to Ft Worth empty both ways... speeds ranged from 60-100 cruise set on 85 and averadged 17. 5 for the trip. That included the 1. 5 hours we idled trying to get out of the speedway(Morons had 4 lanes necked into ONE!!) Thats great in my book for a 7000lbs truck and my lead foot driving around those poky texas drivers lol #ad

I've got over 18,000 miles on my 2001. 5 (took delivery the week before this past Thanksgiving). Since the first week of December I have average 17. 7 mpg (total miles/total fuel) on winterized fuel. My per tank max. has been 18. 9mpg and my min. was 15. 6mpg.

Mostly limited access highway driving (60mph max). Lots of snow and cold this year plus 700 lbs of weight in the bed to help the "light" rear end in snow.

Beats my '94 318 gasser!

From what I've read here, the 24 valve engine
won't EVER get as good mileage as the 12 valve.

Also, the 24 valve needs about 10K miles to break in before the MPG will improve.

Seems DC programmed the 24V with retarded timing to get emissions numbers down, hence the poorer fuel mileage. Adding a timing box
(like the EZ or DDTTM) advances the timing somewhat and increases MPG averaging +2 to +3
MPG.

So, after break in miles the 24V seems to run at 18-19 MPG. Add the timing box, and you can get 20-23 MPG.

Looking forward to seeing these numbers on my own rig. #ad

The 24v actually gets better fuel mileage. Towing that is. The 24v has a broader power band so you have more power but if you use it all your mileage goes down. It is in our TDR magazine, my brother has my mag. The article compared the 12v and 24v towing a 5-wheel in a head wind. Thats all I can remember.

I switched fron a 95 12 valve 2500 to a 2001 ETH 3500 and was also dissapointed with fuel economy at first. The more miles I put on it the better it performs. The first 5000 towing miles it was about 1. 5 mpg less than the 2500. for the last 7500 miles the fuel average is almost identical. My 95 is BOMBED and the 2001 is nearly stock. I have noticed the 2001 ETH pulls STRONG #ad
#ad
! I do bieleve if the two trucks were pulling side by side with equil loads the economy would be near the same. I drive the 2001 more agressivly and it is heavier than the 95. IMO give it some break in time and DONT baby it. These comparisons are with a #20,000 CGVW. I very rarely drive my trucks without a load.

For what it is worth---

I just crunched the mileage numbers for my 2001 ETH/DEE Quad cab short bed 4 x 4. In about 19,000 miles of to-the-drop records of fuel purchased, the truck has averaged 19. 14 mpg. This is about a 50/50 mix of city/highway with max speeds of about 65-68 mph, only a minor amount of towing. (Less than 2000 rpm with 3. 54's)

My immediate past truck was a 2000 Ford F250 Super Duty 4 x 4 Powerstroke with automatic and 3. 55's. In 30,000 miles under the same conditions it averaged 15. 8 mpg. At the same time, I poured literally gallons of Stanadyne into it at fillup time because it had a severe case of idle knock and a mild case of cackle. When it knocked, you could feel it in the floorboards.

As you might imagine, this is why I bought the Ram.

Carry on.

Harry

Thanks much to all. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Some of my buddies drive power smokes and they only want to talk about horsepower, and never about fuel economy #ad
.
I will continue to drive it hard and hope the mileage improves. RAM ON!!!! #ad

Thought I'd through in my $0. 02.

5500 miles on mine. I can get 20 if I drive 65... but thans no fun. It's about 17 when I drive normally #ad
But any kind of wind kills me. I did a test this weekend, at 70 I pulled in behind a big rig and the computer went from 18 to 20.

Did my first tow this weekend. 9500lb from Phoenix to Yuma (flat)I got 10 mpg at 65. Not what I had hoped for... . but I did notice about a 1mpg increase after I unhooked #ad

Just got back from an Omaha/Denver round trip last week. My truck now has a bit under 4000 miles on it. Got 19. 9 mpg on the way to Denver, with a cross wind Omaha to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Head wind Cheyenne to Denver. Got 21. 98 mpg Denver to Omaha. Had Cross wind Denver to Cheyenne. Tail wind Cheyenne to North Platte, and cross wind rest of the trip. Needless to say I am most pleased
