Hey I have a 2001 Cummins and it has 113,000 miles. It has been starting great, but once I try to give any throttle it will spit and sputter. Also cruising down the road it will fall on its face and lose power and not acccelerate. I can keep steady speed but more throttle does nothing. Blows lot of white smoke. Though it could have been a sensor but asked 2 dealers and one said sounds like injection pump other said transfer pump. No check engine light has come on. Just wondering if anyone knows what it sounds like. Any help is much appreciated. P. S. Transfer pump was replaced once at 80,000 miles.

Have you checked your fuel pressure???

Did the dealers???

You can hook a mechanical FP guage and hook it up to the schrader vavle on the vp44 injection pump. Start the truck and see if you have pressure of vacuum.

Then report what you find.

APPS throttle position sensor? Turn the key on-off-on-off-on-off and see if there are any codes? Prey you don't get code 0216! (inj pump timing)

Check and see if you have any of the following codes:

p0121, p0122, p0123 == dead APPS

p0216, p1688, p1689 == dead VP44

Judging by the mileage, and having a dead transfer pump, I would be willing to bet you will have one of the second set of codes. Unfortunately, this will probably result in having a dead or dying injection pump. The sputtering of the engine, and the white smoke are usually signs associated with a impending VP44 failure. Get ready to shell out some serious cash for a new one.

An APPS failure is usually associated with just a non-responsive accelerator. The truck will return to a normal idle, no matter how hard you push on the loud pedal. There is usually no sputtering or hesitation involved, just a dead accelerator when the APPS fails.

Thanks so far guys. I checked my fuel pressure and im getting 5psi at idle. Normal is 10psi. Im gonna try to replace the lift pump and see what happens. I just hope i havent smoked my injection pump by running it like this. It only does it when its cold, once its warmed up it runs fine. You cant check any codes without taking it to a dealer can you? i though they stopped allowing you to do that in a earlier year. Thanks again i appreaciate it.

2001 code checking works on the odometer. key on (not start), key off, on, off, on and leave it on third time without starting and codes will magically appear. NOT ALL codes will show, but most of the nasty ones will. Do the fuel filter at the same time if it hasn't been done recent, maybe it was even a bad load of fuel in the tank.

If it is just the lift pump, and you haven't smoked the injector pump yet, you might want to consider an inline pusher pump that mounts right in front of the fuel tank. I have around 20psi at idle and 12psi at WOT. Good luck!

its your VP44 more than likely. mine started doing this when cold you could take off and it would puff white smoke and have no power, it would clean up and then run fine. out on the highway if i let off or coasted a while and then went to get back on it i'd have no power. i found if i just left the pedal down a few seconds it would come alive again and go. did this for a few weeks while trouble shooting then finally got a code (0216) pointing to the pump. i replaced it (VP44) and fixed the problem.

have you pulled your codes? i had no light either, but did get 0216 code when pulled.

Thanks again guys. I checked the codes and 0216 came up. Guess my VP44 is the problem. How much has it cost other people to get them put in? Also, will it hurt anything else to run my truck like this? Thanks alot.

Hey do yourself a favor and while the shop or yourself is changing out VP44 put in a fuel pressure gauge! -Cheap insurance. Then you'll have an indicator that something is wrong or filter needs to be changed. If you don't you WILL have this happen again.

I agree. The fuel pressure gauge is the most important on these trucks. Without it you are in the dark to who knows what kind of problems.

What is there that you can do if you notice a drop in fuel pressure though? If the pump is going bad theres nothing you can do about it. Someone tell me different because i dont know much about the guages. thanks

The reason you want a FP gauge is so you can catch a lift pump problem before it starves the VP-44 and kills it. You should have between 12-15 psi at idle, and no less than 8 at full tilt. Best money you will ever spend!!! :D

Cumminstuff.com has the best price on a vp44 replace lift pump add a pusher pump and fuel pressure guage when you do the work. When fuel pressure drops on the guage you need to replace lift pump that is why you need one it is like running a diagnostic all the time.

back to the issue that the lift pump not only provides fuel for the engine, but the VP44 bypasses any extra fuel back to the tank--that's how the VP44 gets cooled!

The reason most felt is either $15. 00 for filter when you notice lower psi-

or if you dont put psi gauge- figure on $200. 00 Lift Pump and if your really lazy starve that injection pump out with a clogged $15. 00 filter- and you'll risk losing the Injection pump- About $1400. 00 to $1600. 00 :{ So if you think about it- investing in about $75. 00 - $100. 00 in a fuel psi gauge will with out a doubt save you time,money and headaches. Not a bad investment. :rolleyes:

Hey thanks for the help guys. Where would you all suggest I get some gauges from? Also, i was wondering if anyone had the pillar cluster, i like the looks of them and was wondering how big of a pain they are to put in. THanks again.
