I am looking at a 2001 HO (6spd) 4x4 SLT Quad Cab short box truck and giving serious consideration to purchasing the truck. Any advice and suggestions as to what to look for as far as the most common problems. The truck is completely stock. Oil and filters have been changed regularly. Overall the truck appears to be in good condition and runs well.

The thing to check or have checked is the lift pump pressure to make sure the lift pump is good and that it hasnt been running with out enough pressure and damaging the VP-44 pump. I'm currently helpng a guy that has had a used truck for 6 months and not running right so I checked the lift pump and it was bad and its been that way for a long time. Now that we have put a new lift pump on its starting to show that the main pump is going out. So I would have it checked out first.

It sounds just like my truck. The only weak point to these trucks seems to be the lift pumps so you might want to install a fuel pressure gauge. The H/O are also supposed to be prone to high E. G. T's so perhaps an E. G. T gauge might be in order otherwise they are great trucks . Enjoy.

:) I have an H. O. . Love it. if the lift pump and the injections pump are good, go for the gusto. If not, maybe the individual that is selling the truck will come down in price by the amount of a new pump for you. I've logged 80,235 miles with no problems. :D

Some of the six speeds have a notchy feel when going from second to third, it's almost like gear grind. Mine does it still at 23,000 miles. Sometimes it's temp. related but most times it just wants to be nursed into gear instead of shoved.

I suspect my synchros are getting bad too since most times it balks when I'm trying to shift into almost any gear when stopped.

There are others that have had the same problems here, some are fixed with synthetic lube and others with a new clutch.

If the truck your looking at is still under warrenty and has any transmission problems you might have it fixed by DC.

Thank you for your comments. If the price is right and everything checks out I will make the change to the 2001.

A 2001 should still be under full warranty unless you have more than 100K on the clock your lift pump and VP pump problems (if you even have any)will be under warranty. I wouldn't worry much about it and if the truck looks good, go for it.

2001 H.o

I also have a 2001 ho just turn 36k on it and lift pump GONE. Check fuel pressuse and keep a close eye on it. Other than that it's a great truck. Eric
