I was under the truck checking things out (actually changing oil and other maintenance) when I noticed that one of the bolts that attaches the hub assembley to the axle had backed out about 3/8" and another one has come completly out. What can be causing this? I jacked the tire off the ground and tried to see if the bearing was loose, but the tire had no movement in or out at all. I picked up another bolt and tried to thread it into the hole where I lost a bolt and it would not start. So now I have a spare bolt and three tight bolts holding the hub on. What do I need to do here?

Have you owned the truck since new? Have you had the ball joints replaced? You may be able to repair the threads with a chaser, or just replace the hub.

I have not owned the truck since new, but I have owned it the past 70,000 mi. The ball joints have been replaced. They are about 20,000 mi. old.

I guess what I am trying to figure out is why the bolts keep backing out. Will the hub be ok with just three bolts? It still feels tight.

Sounds like the guy who replaced your ball joints forgot to tighten the hub bolts. Better check the other side to. I think the torque is supposed to be 45#.

Mike W.

Just had my hubs off to replace the axle joints. What a project.
