Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 2001 smokes heavy on start up

Hello,



I am new to this sight and I have a problem i need some help on. My father has a 2001 24 valve 2500 with 5 speed transmission, and 4wd. Since he has the five speed his engine is not an H. O. He lives in southern Montana and has lately complianed that when he starts the truck up to let it warm up that it will run fine for about 10 seconds then will smoke white real heavy. It does this if you do not plug it in. He also ran it last winter and it did not smoke like this at all. He is real concerned because his 93 chevy 6. 5 diesel smokes less than his dodge :-laf . I am thinking it is a relay with the grid heaters or an over fuel problem or maybe the IAT sensor????. The truck does not miss even when it smokes and runs good smoke goes away once warmed up. any info would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds normal for southern Montana this time of year.



The grid heaters may not be working - your father should be able to tell based on cycling of the voltage meter. If it stays around 14 V when idling after the days first start, then they are not working. You would expect the voltage to cycle between 9V and 14V.

Yea that is about what it looks like when he does'nt plug it in. Is that normal for you? You have to understand I am in southern NM so it gets cool but they only blow a little white smoke. My dads truck is all stock too No Heavy injectors or mods no chip either. I'll just tell him he needs to plug it in becasue it runs fine.
