My 2001 just recently started stalling randomly while sitting at stop lights. It's done it 3 times now and it started right back up every time. It also occasionally has a rough idle or misses/stumbles. Does the VP go out like this without throwing codes? No VP codes, only P 1740 and P 1693 when I check with the key. Or, does it throw codes I'm not seeing with the key trick?

I'm assuming it's a fuel related problem. Fuel Pressure is fine, approx 17psi with a raptor pump. I installed a new Timbo APPS within the last year, so i don't think it's the APPS.

How much should I expect to pay for a new VP44 and installation?
How much would I pay for a new set of injector lines if I wanted those as well?

I don't want to drive the truck anymore because I don't have time to deal with a break down. I'm located in Southern California. Let me know if you think this could be anything but my VP44.

How does it act under acceleration? Have you pulled the fuel filter since it started acting up? What happens if you kick it into neutral when your stopped?

P1740 TCC Overdrive Solenoid Performance.

I'm not sure about that code, if it came up recently while you started having problems it may be related. I wouldn't think so given it has to do with the OD solenoid but a failing torque converter can cause the same symptoms you describe.

Hopefully Cerberusium sees this post.

You really need to put an actual code reader on it, 1693 is a companion code, basically telling you there is another code your not seeing with the key trick.

I had the truck scanned today. Codes were P 0232 and P 1689

Do I have a wiring/ground issue? The truck started and drove fine today after sitting for a couple weeks, although I didn't drive that far. To date it's just stalled on me a few times at traffic lights, and then stumbled/missed a couple times at idle. Wondering if the VP is on the way out.

What kind of code reader did you use? Both of the codes you listed are possibly being generated FROM the ECM, so at this point I would not be condemning the VP. It is very possible you have a broken or corroded wire or ground/connection somewhere. Best to start there.

P0232 - Fuel Shutoff Signal Voltage Too High
Fuel shut-off signal voltage too high from ECM to fuel injection pump.
P1689 - No Communication Between ECM and Injection Pump Module
Data link circuit failure between ECM and fuel injection pump. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops.
Monitor & Set Conditions
Communication between Engine Control Module (ECM) and fuel injection pump module is monitored when
ignition is on. Injection pump module is referred to as Fuel Pump Control Module (FPCM) in test procedures.
DTC may be stored if the time between CAN messages is more than 3 seconds or FPCM does not receive CAN
message.
Possible Causes
o Wiring & Connectors
o Fuel Injection Pump Relay Output Circuit Open
o Ground Circuit Open Or High Resistance
o Datalink (+) Circuit Open
o Datalink (+) Circuit Shorted To Ground
o Datalink (-) Open
o Datalink (-) Shorted To Ground
o ECM

Check all wiring and ground connections. The ECM ground is on the driver's side of the engine block near the starter. Check ECM connector and VP44 connector to ensure they are corrosion free and properly connected. You can also test the fuel injection pump relay or swap it with the horn relay.

Location of fuel injection pump relay.

Thanks for the info JR. A Snap-on scanner was used, not sure exactly what model but it had a color screen and they showed me the codes that displayed. I live at the beach so it could very easily be a corroded wire.

I don't want to give you any anxiety, just sharing, what you are describing "stalls for no real reason" is what mine was doing, every once in a while for a few months, then one day on the way to work I was going down the road, took my foot off the go pedal and when I went back to the go pedal there was nothing? No lights on the dash as if it stalled or anything? Was lucky enough to coast into a lot, turn key off, on, tried to start nothing. VP just died and just like that. Oh, there were no codes either, funky. I got a stock VP from Throbred Diesel for $1050. and installed in driveway. I think the pumps are under a grand now. Hardest part of the job was getting the gear pulled off the pump before you remove from the gear case. The instructions were awesome and oddly enough Auto Zone had the correct puller to loan. This pump is still going strong see signature for when it went out. Hope you find out what it is and it's not the VP. But....

Yeah, we didn't find anything specific yet so I'm still just limping it around town in case the VP goes....how many hours does it take to change the VP for someone who has done it previously? 4-6hrs?

Thanks for the link to the Thoroughbred site, it looks like the VP I need from them is $975. Now I know where I'll get it in case mine dies on the road like yours did. So when you put your new VP in did you tap the wire immediately?

Change out depends on if you have done it before. But 2-3 hours is good. Be sure to get a good gear puller, I got mine from Geno's garage. Also check your cam position sensor. Mine did same thing die out . I change mine no more problem. Geno's has them too.
