Hello all, my 2001 with a new Blue Chip Pump (OK 1500 miles on it so far) with Air-Dog lift Pump just started acting up.

In the morning, (two days ago, and then again yesterday) The truck will start normally, then suddenly stall. After cranking for a minute or so, it will start. After the roughness goes away, it runs normally.

It seems to me that it is somehow losing its "prime." When I bump the key, I have 10-15# pressure.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately, I'd say the AirDog.... not on my list of favorites.... but, given what you're telling us, if it's running and still building pressure, then it's probably going to be a check valve or loose hose, allowing air to seep in and let fuel run back to tank. I'd replace the return line check valve to start with.

Confirm that the AD fuel pump is running the normal pre-start cycle first. Turn the key to ON and you should hear the AD run for approx 2 seconds and stop. The fuel pressure gauge should reflect at or close to max psi then drop back to zero.

If this is happening as it should then you'll need to revisit all the fuel line connections you touched during the replacement and make sure they're all tight and not leaking.

Do NOT touch the return line check valve. Its only a check ball valve with a constant orifice and if it ever fails (highly unlikely) then it wont cause what you're experiencing. I just sounds like you may have a leak and the prime is being lost and the fuel lines are getting air in them. The truck starts just long enough to suck in the air and then you have to recrank to get past the air.

Generally if a leak is the problem then parking the truck with the nose down and rear upwards, like on a hill. This prevents gravity from pulling the fuel back to the fuel tank and sometimes can preserve the prime. If the truck starts and runs normal after being parked like this overnight then thats an indication of the problem.

I out the pump on over three months ago. This problem just started the last couple of days. When I am in the shop, I will put it on the scanner and see if there are any codes that show up. Nope show up using the key sequence.

I hope you have made some head way on this one.

Just to remind some of the TDR regulars this is a super nice Texas truck that is in Germany that is used for work, it made the back of the calendar last year bottom right corner area the silver one pulling a travel trailer. Go to kriskringles profile to see a link of that pic, (this new forum format is not set up like the old one where you.can easily see this info.) Huge Geno's supporter for parts has visited the states for parts to keep this rig in top shape.

I don"t have much to add but know you will get this figured out, flip a email to Geno's if you have to maybe they can get some tech support ticket going with someone if you happened to get this round of parts thru them, or know of a resource to assist. In case it is a AD issue or leakdown issue.

Thanks Tim. Yep! Figured it out. When I replaced the pickup in the tank I ended up running a rubber line from the tank to the lift pump. I turns out (It was cloth-wrapped) it was porus about 10" from the tank. I had noticed over the last two weeks that the fuel pressure was dropping, and wondered if it was time to change the filter.

And yes, Between Geno's and Rock Auto, Shaun (name of my truck) is in top shape. I can also recommend Blue Chip diesel. Their Special X pumps really do deliver better mileage and power.
