I'm a new owner/member. I did a search on this topic, and found no results...

When looking at the tach on my 2001 2500, I noticed that there are 3 marks between 1000 rpm and 1500 rpm. And the same from 1500 to 2000 rpm, and so on. So logically, the middle mark would be halfway between 1500 and 2000 rpm; i. e. 1750 rpm. Therefore each mark represents 125 rpm. I guess I just assumed they were 100 rpm each. Kinda weird thinking... 1500, 1625, 1750, 1875, 2000.

Thus the last white mark is 3250 rpm.

Has this been discussed before? Was anyone else thinking they were 100 rpm each? What is the advantage of this non-standard marking?

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks, Tim

Never tried to get my RPMs within the exact number. How often do you need to know RPM with a +/- 25 rpm range?? Just curious

Tim - I am under the same dillision and confusion that you are.
I might have a train of thought and glance at the tac. It requires me to think about it and lose my other train of thought.
Maybe its metric, I don't know. The way it is is ludicrist, that I do know.
Jim
P. S. Its better than the one on my '93 which was none.

In this age of cost cutting, they are trying to save every penny they can, so they decided us red-necked, illiterate, knuckle draggers that drive diesels can't count anyway, so we'd never know there was only 3 lines instead of 4 between the 500 marjers, and DC could save $. 0000000000001 per vehicle #ad

At least that sounds like a good conspiracy theory, right??? #ad

Kinda reminds me of the "check gages" idiot light. Guess they saved a bundle leaving out that costly "U", we all know how expensive "U"s can be nowadays #ad

Tom, your theory rings truest to me.

As for the metric ideas... Which unit(s) would be metric? A revolution is a revolution. A minute is a minute. (Saturday Night Live (back in the 70's) did a great skit about metric time keeping, but I don't think that helps us here. )

Anyway, it's just one more little thing that Dodge can say is "Different".

Factory cost cutting measures are always interesting fodder!!!

I get an early Chevy rag that talked about some number crunching in the mid 60's. .
In 67 when the General came out with disc brakes, thae made a big deal out of it and put a nice stainless steel button on the brake pedal that proclaimed to the world : "DISC BRAKES". By 69 everybody knew about the DB's, and the number crunchers looked at the button cost, and deleted them for the next year. GM saved over 900K.
We've all seen the big auto companies do this for years, and DC has never been an exception..... Look at the 01. 5 truck... . All trucks after Sep (?) were 01. 5's, and the dealer invoice went up like... . $400. . yes, we did get rear DB's, but they also did some cost cutting measures elsewhere.

IAC..... Interesting!

OK, I checked the 96 V-10 tach. It's marked in 250 RPM increments up to the 4500 RPM redline, then in 125 RPM red increments from 4500 to 6000 RPM. Funny that I had never noticed that. #ad

..... and now you will notice it EVERY time you drive. #ad

Willyslover is right, this has been brought up at least a couple of times times in the last several years... it was even brought up on the CDW BB.

Thanks DC! #ad

This has nothing to do with the metric system. The 125 RPM increments are English, as in 1/8=. 125, 1/4=. 250, 3/8=. 375, and so on. Need to think in terms of you're tape measure! I agree 100 RPM increments would be simpler for most people. (That would be like the metric system though and you know how we Americans accepted that!) I'm a machinist so I'm always converting fractions to decimals and metric to english so thinking in terms of 1/8 increments comes more natural to me than most I suppose.

Before I purchased my truck, I went through building a spreadsheet figuring out what size tire/wheel and rear axle ratio might give me about 65mph at peek HP in OD and about 65mph at peek torque in 3rd. After getting the truck and making the mods, I couldn't figure out why the numbers didn't match. Until someone pointed out that the tach is divided into 8ths instead of 10ths. Oh well. Hate to admit that I didn't notice that! I was thinking about changing out the gauge faces with a kit that is available. For those with the white Autometer gauges, it would be a nice fit. Unfortunately, they are also dividing the tach into 8ths. They look good though. http://www.nrauto.com/sub_index. asp?spage=Gauges
