Can anyone tell me with any certainty if the 2001. 5 Auto's went 100% electronic cruise control or did they still use the speed/cruise control servo?

I've done a manual to auto swap and also changed to a 2001 Auto ECM because the anti-stall feature in the manual ECM caused a romp, romp (bucking) feeling at stops and heavy brake pedal effort.

Now the auto ECM has fixed the bucking and brake effort but my cruise light is on all the time and my CC does not work. I'm hoping its just an early 2001 ECM and its looking for the CC servo.

Any help would be appreciated.

A couple months back i had some interest in p- pumping mine. Sheid diesel asked me if the cruise light in the dash lit up yellow or green. he said if it lights up green it is servo controlled, if it lights up yellow it is controlled entirely by the ECM. Mine indeed lights up yellow and it has NO servo controller.

Mine lights up yellow but since it was a six speed, it definitely "was" 100% ecm controlled. Since I've now gone to an auto ECM, I imagine the light color in the dash would still be yellow, I'm just trying to retrofit a servo to my truck. I just hope its plumbed for it. Anybody know?

now i completly understand your issue, i think your on the right track the ecm is probably looking for the servo. now i wonder, did they supply the wiring in the harness for the servo? if not you my have to get a schematic and add the wires in the ECM main plug, after you know which ones. I would look in the location where the servo would normally be on an early 01. maybe you'll be lucky and the plug will aready be there.

The servo-based cruise should even work on the newer trucks that have the capability of all-electronic cruise. I have a 2002 that came without cruise, and I bought the cruise kit from Dodge (vacuum servo, steering wheel switches, clock spring, etc. ) and it works fine. Bolt on, plug in. All the connectors for the old cruise were left in the harness and the ecm runs it fine, and the (yellow) cruise light in the dash works too.

Thanks for the replies. I sure hope it works, I'm going to order a servo on Monday and hope for the best! Does it just plug in underneath the APPS? I haven't pulled the battery yet, but I'm hoping the servo connection is obvious.

From the 2001 Ram FSM & 2002 Ram 2500/3500 FSM:

DESCRIPTION

A speed control servo is not used if equipped with both a diesel engine and a manual transmission.

This is contrary to the popular view that the change to the ECM speed control occured mid-model year 2001 for all Cummins/Rams. The FSM's clearly state that all 2001 & 2002 gasoline powered 2500's & 3500's, as well as diesel /auto. equipped Rams still have the vacuum servo.

The PCM is different on Auto Rams vs. Manual Rams.

this cruise control kit you speak of, what did it run you price wise if you dont mind me asking?? i just put a tilt steering column in my truck and it has cruise buttons but no cruise. ive discovered the clockspring is bad also, mine is an auto 2001. 5. do you guys think mine will be electronic?? will the servo based version work on my truck easier?? thanks

Ok, how about a reverse of this same problem? I am thinking the shop sold me an ECM for an auto transmission. Mine lights up yellow as stated above and has the same transmission and all, but the cruise light is on, stays on, and refuses to control any speed. The horn works and I repeatedely pushed the on/off button while turning the wheel with no luck so I am thinking it's not the clockspring.

If indeed my "new" ECM is searching for a servo, shouldn't I be able to turn the light off and on?

Lastly, is there some way I can fix it without the hassle of finding another ECM?

I am about to pull my hair out (or possibly someone elses#@$%!) or this whole thing. I got a deal on the used ECM at $350 but if there's no cruise, I want nothing to do with it. (One of the reasons I bought this thing!!)

OK, the ON button turns on the "cruise" light and nothing changes on the dash when you engage it. SNOKING

The button on the left side of the steering wheel, on/off should toggle the "cruise" light on and off on the dash. SNOKING

All Of The Auto Trans Speed Controlers Are Controled But The Chrysler Pcm Mounted On The Right Side Firewall & All Use A Vacuum

Servo Even 03 & 04 Conected To The Apps Throttle Sensor Mounted On Eng . With Kickdown Cable Goning To Trans , Manual Trans Are Controled With The Cummins Controler

Understood. My switch, however, does nothing. The cruise light comes on with the ignition and stays on. Pushing the on/off switch does nothing and the set, ACC, etc. are not working either.
