I'm thinking about getting an automactic due to bum knees and a

soon to be replacements. Would want this to be a 1 ton non dulley.

I know the 03 is sweet sounding and riding truck but from what I have read here the milage is not great, even though my neighbor drives his 6 speed HO 03 about 400 to 500 miles a day and says he gets 22 to 23.

I sure do not want to give up the 16 to 18 mpg hauling my camper around with my 95

What can one except from the 02 with an auto as far as milage goes.

I'm not worried about the rattle & clatter of the 02 as I'm now driving my 2nd 12 Valve

Ray,

Just for your comparison, I had a 2001. 5 CTD with 3. 54/auto and I consistantly got 22 mpg empty. I now have the 2003 CTD HO 6 sp/ 4:10 rear end and I'm getting 17. 9 consistantly. I now have a tool box in the back of the new truck pretty much loaded down with log chains and chain booms which I estimate to be at least 500 pounds. At first I wished I hadn't gotten rid of the 2001, but after driving this new puppy I am super happy with this truck. I have 9400 miles on it.

Thanks for your reply. As I said the 03 is a sweet truck as that is what fishing buddy has so I get to ride in it a lot. I think I will have my dealer start looking for an 02 Cummins Auto w/354 Ext Cab 4X4

Have you heard anything about trucks being sold very cheap someplace in Oklahoma. A long haul cattle truck driver that comes to our sale yard says an 02 can be purchased for around 18 grand. !!!!

If your going to go to an '02 I don't think your ahead mileage-wise from going to an '03. Neither one will give you the mileage of your '95... . but it seems most of the '03's are doing as well as or better than the '98. 5's to '02's. I think you have a better shot at good mileage with an '03 than any 2nd gen. truck.

Our local dealer had a 03,4 door. Auto,4x4 with no frills, diesel. 1 ton, single rear tires, rubber floor mats w/cruise,CD player and air for 26900. 00

told me it was sold when I stopped in but could get me another one. I;m going to check with two other dealers this Monday and see what they can do. It will just depend what they will give me for my 95. It only has 130,000 on it .

A auto would make it much easier for my wife to drive also along with giving my left knee a needed rest when traveling. Time will tell though.

Nkiewel, That could very well be the case "no SRW in the 02"

I assume the SRW stands for single rear wheels!!

I have not looked at new since I bought my 95 so I'm not really up to snuff on what' whats.

I have 3 dealers working up a price on a no frills 03 auto,4x4

4 door 3/4

Ray, I bought my 03 1 ton with single rear wheels about 3 weeks ago and I love this truck! It has tons of power and the best set of brakes that I have ever owned. The mileage could be a little better, but I expect it to pick up as the truck breaks in. Other than that, I have no complaints. It is a wonderful truck.

My 03 is on its way.

Well now, we will sign the papers tomorrow on our 03,3500,SRW, 48RE Auto,HO Cummins and SLT/Laramie. Atlantic blue. :D

The dealer has to pick it up in Portland so it should be ready Fri or Sat.

As my wife said, my getting a new truck makes an old man act like a young buck.

95 to '03

Ray,

Your going to love your new truck. I had a (still do) '95 2500 4x4 and recently purchased an '03, 3500, 4x4 SRW. When I left the dealer it had 22 miles on it and was getting about 13. 5 miles/gal. I had 500 miles to drive home and watched my mileage improve all the way there. For the last 50 miles, it got 17. 6 miles/gal. I'm sure it will keep getting better for a while. I have a slide in camper. This new truck handles it sooo good! The old 95 was nice but the difference in power, braking, handling can't be described. I got the 6 spd and it's the only thing I've been second guesing. Maybe I should have gotten the auto??

Enjoy your new truck!

Bill.

It looks like the truck will get here the middle of the week. Frontier Motors made a swap with a dealer in Portland and the rig they traded was on the train in Portland. It has to be delivered to LaGrande and then they have to haul it back to Portland and get ours.

Our first one was a 91 and then when I retired 8 years ago I said

I will get a new truck and it will be the last one I will have to buy. :) But, bad knees ="Auto"and needing more room so the dogs could have their own window to stick their head out changed our mind. along with the fact it will handle a bigger camper than what we have.

The 95 was/is a great truck and it hauled a lot of firewood out of places I will not be able to take the 03. "Wife would shoot me if I tried" Know she will love driving it not having to shift. Also hauled some nice Elk out of the mountains.

:D :D :D :D :D

Hey Ray,

Did you end getting a 3500 SRW 4X4 auto ST like the truck you saw initially for $26900?. That's a awsome price, I just bought the same truck although it was more money even through the dealer sold it at invoice and then took of the $2500 rebate. If you got it for $26900 I wonder how the dealer was able to sell it so cheap?

That truck for 26. 900 was bare as new baby, rubber floor mats and no power anything. A Good ranchers work truck and the wife said she wanted something nicer.

We ended up with the 3500,HO Auto, SRW SLT/Laramie in Atlantic Blue:D :)

I worked 3 dealers in the Northwest for prices and our local one beat them all.

Dealer

Ray,

I tried working with my local dealer here in Bend. They chased my business out of town. I ended up going to Dave Smith in Kellog, ID. I talked to them on a Wed. Flew up on Friday and drove the new beauty home on Saturday. It was a nice way to break her in. They are a no hassle dealer. $217 over invoice less 2500 rebate and $1000 additional rebate via factory mail offer.

Ray,

To give you an idea on fuel mileage, I haul a Lance 1121 camper, which is 11'6" and the second heaviest camper Lance builds with our '03 3500 DRW, HO/48RE, 4. 10 Ratio, and it gets from 13 to 16 MPG depending on the wind, grades, and speed. I normally drive 65 MPH on the highway hauling the camper.
