Sorry if this seems long. This is my first post, I don't want to offend anyone. I've been lurking for months and just registered. I'm ready to start moderately bombing my almost broke in (6000 miles) baby.

I'm currently installing an A-pillar w/EGT, Fuel pressure, Boost, and transmission Temp gauges. I would like to end up with 350 to 400hp. I know from researching TDR that a transmission upgrade is almost mandatory at this hp. I notice a lot of signatures show upgraded tc and vb. Is this all that is nessacery or do I need to upgrade the complete transmission?

I will be doing moderate (frequently) to heavy (occasionally)towing. I'll also be playing a little!!

Is a turbo upgrade mandatory (HY35 currently)?

I was thinking DD2's or DD3's what do you think?

Would an Edge Comp be appropriate?

How about a 4" JRE Exhaust and a Volant filter box?

I currently have around $3000 for bombing. The rest will have to come a little at a time? As you can probably tell I don't want to cut corners, only the best. Can You help with a recommended order?

Thanks

i would get a manual and then go from there... . no sense in putting a new transmission in a new truck that already has a brand new transmission in it... unless u cant stand a stick... but that is just me... save yourself 4-5k with a manual and upgrade the clutch and then bomb.

midwestdually; If I knew then what I know now I would probably own a 6 spd or held out for the 305hp 2003's. At this time, however, I have too much invested in the Auto, I'm gonna live with it for a few years.

I would do the EZ (if you can't live with stock power until you upgrade your transmission) and then when the transmission starts to slip I would upgrade the TC. You need to do a lot of reading on transmission upgrades and talk to the suppliers. Welcome to the TDR.

My engine is stock and I am one of those stick shift freaks so I don't know much about the auto's and what to tell Ya' ; but I did want to say WELCOME !!!!!! Thomas

If your already asking about 2's and 3's and a comp and towing... ... 3k will get ya nice pulling transmission that can handle the "play" HP... ... ... . I went with DTT and I would do it again.

if you go with the 3 yes a turbo upgrade will be needed to keep EGT's under control while towing. As for exhaust and air intake mods, those are "standards" for even light bobming if you want to use the power.

Same as my Truck

Welcome to the TDR Elmer. I have amost exactly the mods on my truck that you listed for yours.

With so few miles on your truck, you can get away with just a VB and TC. The seals and clutches should be fine in the trans. I went with DTT's VB and 89% TC. The difference from stock is phenomenal, you won't believe how your truck drives.

I now have BD 3 injectors, and a Drag Comp box. I have a Piers 'Nasty Nine' HY turbo, this is a slight improvement over a stock HY turbo.

With the above combination, I can exceed 1300* at will with the Comp on any setting over 2/2. A Piers HX40 is badly needed. I just don't /can't run a lot of power for very long, I will be very illegal or unsafe very fast. ! I'm sure with smaller injectors you could do just fine with the HY turbo.

However, I have towed an 8500# TT, and was able to run 70-80 mph and stay under 1300* with the Comp on 1/3. For 'normal' driving and using a 2/2 setting, the truck is very enjoyable to drive, and I don't use higher Comp settings very often. Usually only when messing around.

Do the gauges, trans, [fuel box if you can't wait] air filter and exhaust. then if you are going to tow a lot, stick with stage 2 injectors, this way you can probably tow with out any EGT issues. The BHAF and Rip Rook Exhaust would get my vote.

Hope this helps. Greg L, The Noise Nazi

Elmer, I second what Greg said. I went with Banks first ( before I had heard about TDR ) three months later I had to get the transmission fixed. I was lucky to have joined TDR and heard about Bill Kondolay (DTT), I drove from Texas to BC to have him do the work. I then tried 275's, later DD2s, had the transmission upgraded with improvements that were not available originally to handle more power ie comp box.

To sum it up, I spent a lot of money to get where I am. If I knew then what I know now this is what I would do.

# 1 Get the transmission upgraded. This makes a world of difference, lets you use the power you have much better. I would go with DTT again but any are better than stock, take your pick.

#2 Get gages

You'll get different opinions as to the order of the following.

#3 Box - PE comp

#4 Injectors - DD2s

#5 Turbo upgrade - get Pier's advice

#6 Exhaust upgrade - 4 in.

#7 Fuel line upgrade - get rid of the banjo bolts.

Do things right the first time and save money.

If you are going to have 400 HP and tow you are going to need a new turbo. The HY will not cut it. If it where me I would get the transmission done up to handle 400 HP and then add the other stuff as you can. I think your transmission is new enough that just a TC/VB and the update kit will be necessary. I will not get into which transmission I would use but you can check my sig for my choice.

You are also going to have to do some fuel system mods... at least get rid of the banjos. .

Thanks guys for all the advice. I will think about what is said and work from there. I'll call today about the transmission. I'll also keep you posted.

Thanks again,

Elmer
