We have an 02 4x4 quadcab with an automatic 27000 mi. Seems like it shifts to quickly from 4th to overdrive. You hardly know 4th is there. 1st-2nd-3rd-very short, quick 4th-then into lugging 5th. Up hill, flat ground or towing. Doesn't seem to matter. Also if going uphill and step on accelerator a little, seems to always jump down to 2nd gear to almost wide open throttle very brief 3rd and back to lugging in forth. It has always done this. I noticed when new it shifted very hard, but after maybe 100mi it got very smooth. Is this common or is something wrong?

Thanks

what your feeling is the torque converter locking up. The auto is a 4 speed trans not a 5, mine does the exact same thing it's normal

2002 AUTO here to

To fix your trany woes and create new ones get an EDGE COMP and tap the Wire It wont downshift unless you go Wide Open Throtle ... insted it will lug ,,,,spool and sling shot you where ever you want to go. . REALLY COOL and once you learn to drive you will let it shift easy untill TC lock then you learn just how much to fuel it before it down shifts its fun keeping it on the edge it will set you back in the seat like a sports car... . you will be amazed... dont over fuel tho because the stock TRANY has a cow and when it trys to down shift it has almost to much tourqe and it can get a bit slipery you dont just pull out and go WOT or your stock trany will be laying on the ground behind you

I have 42,000 on mine and I love it taped for 20,000

In cold weater tho it holds out 2nd gear for a long time and then shifts 3,4 real fast this was said to be the fact of dirty trany fluid. I have yet to change my fluid so I dont know if that will fix that issue or not.

EDGE COMP

EDGE COMP

EDGE COMP

DO IT

You will be making up excuses just to drive somewhere

Just as DCarner said, The shift pattern on an '02 is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, lockup then OD. With the OD switch off, the 4th shift you feel, that gives you only about a 200 RPM drop is your TC lock up. With the OD switch on, there is no 3rd lockup, rather, an OD with lock up that follows 3rd gear and a 500 to 600 RPM drop. At least this is the way my transmission behaves and it is normal. If I am off my mark, others will chime in.

Depending on your rear end gear ratio, 410 versus 355, It will lug going up a hill in OD. 355 gears will load up the engine more than 410 causing the transmission to downshift more and will eventually find its way back to lugging in OD. Try going up steep hills with OD switch off.

i have a 2001 with 27000 also and acts just as everyone has stated,i recently installed gauges, and a mag hy tek dd pan. chrysler recomends transmission service at 30000 so,when i had my transmission man service it he put the pan on, and my sencer on. it does shift a little better but,my transmission has allways shifted very fast and hard. one thing i must tell u is if u service your transmission DO NOT FLUSH IT,OR IT WILL FAIL,hope this helps. . later

What do you mean don't flush it?? I just did!!!

Hi... my first post here. Just signed on today and I must say I'm impressed. Now on to point at hand... . Hey, what do you mean "don't flush the transmission or it will fail". Oh man!!!! Now I'm all freaked out 'cause last week I just had a transmission shop hook me up to one of those machines and suck out all the old stuff and put in all new fluid. I only have 28k on the truck and the new trany isn't in the budget till spring. I just bought a huge 5'ver and now after reading that I'm wondering if I just killed my transmission. Oh. . btw it's an auto trans. Can somebody spread some more light on me here???

Thanks, Kampinkid
