2002 cummings 85,000 miles bone stock except k&n filter. had vp 44 replaced under warrenty right after warrenty replaced lift pump and installed fuel pressure guage, getting good pressure but dont seen to have much power and poor mileage. how do you know if turbo is bad? maybe dirty map sensor?also looking to upgrade exhaust and maybe air intake any suggestions

Sir, please read the door badge on your truck... The engine is a CUMMINS... Not Cummings.....

Good luck with the low power problem, could be a number of things.

if you want to check your turbo, a basic thing to do is remove the air hose from the air box and turbo and check the end play of the compressor shaft.

Do you have a boost gauge installed? If not, they are very easy to install and will also tell you if the turbo is putting out normal pressure.

As far as air intake, I have always preferred AFE products...

Have you ever run a good injector cleaner?

Good luck!

apoligizes for miss spelling

spelling is not my best subject. anyhow there is a little play on the turbo compressor how much is to much. also where is the map sensor located. is it above the lift pump on the block?

No worries!

There should be a little play... This allows the oil to reach and circulate around the shaft. .

I apologize, I should have mentioned, check for evidence of the compressor wheel scarring the housing...

Another easy thing to check, is all of your intercooler and boost hoses all the way around. If they are not tight, you could be down on boost...

Cheers!

thanks for the info, i have used a injector cleaner, good or bad I dont know. i am in the process of looking at the map sensor but need to get a deep socket. turbo looks good no scarring and very littll play. will check all else you mentioned. i guess i should innstall some guages. what about the chips with monitors in cab any suggestions

One option that would work well, but there are others like TST etc... Also, shop around, you may find better deals...

Edge Juice Attitude combo, 98. 5-2002 Dodge 24V Cummins Diesel EJD3500WAM

Without a boost gauge to monitor maximum boost under load you have no way to know if your engine even has a problem. "Low power" is far too subjective a comment to begin randomly throwing expensive parts at the engine.

I definately agree... start with the simple things and rule them out first... air filter, fuel filter, map sensor, tighten hoses etc. You might be suprised what you find. As for guages check the classifieds here on tdr... Theres an edge juice w/attitude on here for $480 and he might take less. Look under site features and classifieds. Let us know what you find. Oh and you might want to see if the truck is throwing any codes... if you dont have a code reader or know anyone with a code reader take it to autozone... they will do it for free.
