Hey,

Has anyone out there priced out one of the hood insulation blankets that used to be standard equipment. I noticed my new 2002 doesn't have one and it is extremely loud. A lot noisier than my '93 Turbodiesel was. Sometimes I actually like to hear the radio!

Thanks.

I've listened to 12Vs and they are quieter IMO. The blanket doesn't do much.

Fewer valves and lower spring tension on the 12Vs. I had one pull up behind me at the pump. 540k mi no repairs or maint other than oil and coolant and the truck looked it;) :p . I was quiet and ran like a top. :)

Mine is missing too! It's a SLT just like my trade-in which was a V-10 and it had a blanket. I'm pi##ed about it. What a way to cut costs. I'll fix them and just not trade it for 25 years!!!

Of course I'll buy from the after market.

BTW, I went out tonight and sprinkled some #2 fuel in it so it smells right!! I have 140 miles on it, have I waited too long to bomb it??

Don't forget the fender wells. The 2002's are short rear fender wells. They just have a piece of plastic to keep the mud from caking the underside of the rear panels. I haven't checked into the hood blanket, but Geno's has one that is a large sheet and you cut to fit. Might be cheaper than DC's solution. But I like to keep everything stock.

I'm jealous!!!

I just can't stand reading about other guys that just got their truck... but I guess I'll soon be getting mine too. I'm going to be calling today to see what the status is... I just hope that it did past inspection and will be shipped tomorrow... but my luck I won't see it until May!

I just put the rear wheel liners in over the weekend. Real easy to do. Took about 5 min per side. Looks a lot better now. I will look to put the liner under the hood soon. Jeff :D

louder without it?

Is it a lot louder without it? I have one in my 01. Is it removable? I love to hear the gentle purr of my little B. :-laf

It's a lot louder than my 1993 Turbodiesel was which had the insulation. However as someone pointed out earlier in this thread, it could also be due to the higher spring rates on the valves. Thanks for all the replies! BD

No Doubt

The engine noise emminating from the hood area on my 01 is A LOT louder than it was on my 95, ther is no question about that, IMO.

Were the '02 Rams supposed to have the rear wheel liners? I don't have them or the insulation under the hood. I would also like to hear the radio once in a while Bratton!:p

Hood Insulation

My 01 was missing the hood liner, I went to the local 5 star where I bought her from and asked the part manager if it should have a liner because I think it should I have the extra insulation package on the truck and they agreed with no cost to me.

The rear wheel liners were something they deleted for the 02 trucks along with other pieces. The liners were $33 from dodge. The pop rivets were $2. 66 apiece and take a special gun to put them in. Jeff

Yea, I bought the rivets and tried to install them myself. You really need the gun. So I went to the hardware store, bought the screws and retainer clips with the thread size and mounted them myself. Cost about $3. 50 for everything. Now the fender wells are tight and can be retightened if needed. A spot of lock-tite helps secure the bolts from coming loose.

;)

Without the blanket under the hood, I really hear my turbine whine at 1800 rpm. So, the blanket is the next purchase for the beast. Keep it warm and quiet... yea... .

Well due to my transmission woes (6-speed failed after 150 miles), the dealer is selling me a hood blanket at cost. $30 instead usual $45. Unfortunately you also need 15 fasteners and those little plastic jobs are $1. 39 each wholesale!

In case you haven't seen the transmission thread, the dealer is going to put in a new 6-speed and pay the cost of the rental car so they are trying to be fair, no complaints here.

PS. someday I'm going to figure out how to use those smilies, they never seem to work for me. BD

The hardware store I visit had the fasteners for . 90 each.

I have never heard my turbo - before or after installing the hood blanket.

Heard the turbo on my '01 all the time.

Don't have a boost gauge, but I know when that turbo has spooled up - I can feel it in the seat of my pants!

Is the "special" gun to install the pop rivets something we can buy/find, or is it on of those special tools only found from places like Miller tool, Snap-on, etc. ??? Would it be cheaper to just have the dealer install the rear wheel wheel liners vs going out and buying this special rivet gun???

PS: was that $33 each or for the pair of liners?

That was each for the liners. A friend of mine had the pop rivet gun. It looks like a regular gun with a bigger hole in it for the rivets. Jeff Oo. Oo. Oo.

$101. 32 is what my dealer wants for the blanket and fasteners. These parts are not listed for '02 truck, only '01 and earlier. Anyone know what other sound insulation pieces I might be missing?

When I spec'ed the truck out on the 4adodge.com site one of the group items was a "Insulation Group - Deluxe". Deluxe - yeah right...
