2002 trailer wiring plug location

I've got a 2002 2500. Currently the truck has a 4-pin trailer connector plugged into the driver's side taillight harness where it crosses over to the passenger side. I need to hook up a 7-pin connector for a new trailer with brakes, but can't find a 7-pin wiring harness connector near the rear of the truck. This truck has the blue brake controller connector under the dash, so I'm assuming it came with the towing package.



If it's got the brake controller connector shouldn't it be equipped with the 7-pin harness connector? Where is it located on a 2002?

If the truck has the factory towing package. It should be located with the 4 pin connector. It is a black box located under the rear bumper located on the drivers side of the reciever mount. The black box should have the 4 and 7 pin connectors side by side. Even says Mopar on it (I think).



It could be in the bed too. Especially if the truck was set up to pull 5th wheel trailers.

The factory 2002 had the 7-pin connector mounted on the receiver hitch frame to the left of the receiver tube as you stand at the rear of the truck looking forward. The 4-pin connector dangled below the 7-pin connector from the same wiring harness. If your truck had the towing package, it should have the receiver hitch as well as the 4-pin and 7-pin connectors.

What is the "blue brake controller"? That doesn't sound like a factory item. The factory towing package doesn't include a brake controller, that's strictly after market.



You might start with a VIN search to try to find out if your truck came with the tow package option. Otherwise, the 7-pin connector should be right where those guys said it is.



When I had my 5th wheel installed by the trailer dealer, they put another 7-pin plug inside the bed - driver's side, side wall. This way the big wire doesn't have to go over the tailgate. I use a V-gate when towing anyway, but it's much neater to have it all inside the bed.

The truck does not have a factory bumper-mounted 7-pin connector -- if it did, I'd be towing already. I am trying to find out if the standard truck wiring harness in fact has the trailer brake wire built in, so I can hopefully plug in a 7-pin trailer connector harness somewhere on the existing truck harness.



Boondocker: Thanks, but I didn't say it had a blue brake controller. I said it has a blue connector under the dash for a controller. I'm hoping that since Dodge provided the controller connection, that they carried the wire back to the tail of the truck in the existing harness.

I think that Dodge sells an accessory kit to add the 7 pin connector to trucks that did not have the factory option.

The trailer harness is connected to connector C129 located above the left front body mount. I believe this is a black 14 pin connector. You either need to build or buy a harness from there to the rear of yhe truck. This info from the '02 manual.
