looking at a used truck and want to find out which trans it has. can you help me out? how much more power will the 48re hold? thanks

If you have the 305 HP it's the 48, 250 HP (california) = 47.

I've heard an extra 40 to 60 HP is about the max for long life in a stock trans.

Actually it is the build date not the engine that determines if it is a a 47 or 48. Anything built after 1/1/03 should be a 48. Also the CA engine is 235HP the non CA SO is 250HP

Post your vin and I can tell you. Also anything over 60 hp on a stock trans and your on borrowed time. It all depends on who built your trans at the plant!

As far as durability, I believe the 48re uses 5 planets vs 4 on the 47RH/RE 2 sets of planetary gears. You can buld up a 47 to a 48. Just my 2 cents, but a billet input shaft with a good double or triple lock converter and modified valve body is the minimum I would go with any performance. I have already replaced 2 input shafts on 47RH, and this was a virtually stock 12 valve doing a little light wheeling. If you want some go info call Suncoast Trans or Goerand Trans.

Yeah but 60hp over what?

There are a few different HP ratings.

60 hp over stock and your on borrowed time. There have been some to run 100 but it also depends how you drive and I would not recommend it. Also... what year is the truck b/c in 2003 they had the 250 hp and the ho 305hp with the 48re but that was 03. 5. 2004 and up is 325 hp and 600 or 610 tq. That is why I ask for vin to get the right config for the truck.

47RE/RH use 5 pinion front 4 pinion rear. 48RE is 6 pinion front and 5 rear among other things.

engine knock???

vin # is 3D7KU28693G749631 is that the 48? it is a CA truck

was told that there is a slight knock at Low RPM. possibly injector problem? What price range does a rebuild cost? I don't want to marry a money pitt.

thanks

JKidd,

That truck is a SO motor which was 250 hp. It will have the 47RE behind it. It wil also have the 10. 5 in. rear end. AS for the stumble. . It could be the injectors... it may not be. If it is the injectors, figure it will be between 800 to 1400. depending on who does the work and for the labor to remove and install the injectors. This price does not include injector(s) if they have to be replaced.
