I was excited when I bought this truck last week, as there were No leaks! Both pinion seals are good, no oil leaks, nothing!
I got home from a work trip to VA late last night, and when I went out this morning, I see fluid under the truck....

Looks like the gasket for the tail end of the trans(best description I have....too dark for pics..) is leaking. Bad...
Is this common, is it a straight forward repair, what would I request in regards to part and anyone have any tips on going about this task?
Is there a location for parts diagrams anywhere?

Thanks y'all, I appreciate the help I received this week on my fan clutch issue....
Great support here!;)

HA, finally found the signature edit option.. That burried in there.
Not sure what Trans it is, hate to ASSume anything.. Whatever 6spd manual was put in the early '03 models...NV5600, G56???? How can I tell??

Stand down y'all..... Once I got it on a lift today and cleaned the area off of fluid, I could see the fluid coming from the Top of the trans case.
There is a "tower" cast into the housing(cast iron trans?) where the shifter goes in... It is burping out of there. It appears it was over serviced at last change, as the fluid coming out is pretty fresh looking/smelling....

I'll attempt to drain it down to the proper fill level at the side plug, and clean it all up again...

If you can, overfill it by a quart.... park on a slope, hill, whatever, helps to keep the rear pocket bearing in lube. Been covered here lots of times ! Oh, And welcome to the site !!

Thank you for the tip!! I'll drain it down to proper level, then add 1 qt back in...
I'll also back into my spot now, to keep it nose up...

thank you!;)

Yeah, all went wrong on this one.... My trans imploded and ate 6th gear on the interstate.....stranded in AL, and had a used, lower miles, transmission installed...

Looks like my Xfer case chain was stretched in the event as well, as I now have a hefty noise in the Xfer case area....
Anyway, just wanted to update this thread, so anyone seeing fluid puke out th top does quicker investigation that I did....

That's an expensive trans to buy, If you can find a decent one....I found one for $2500(with 135k), and another for $3400 (with 100k).

A HARD AND COSTLY LEARNING CURVE::::::NV 5600 the manufacture suggest 4 qts of trans fluid,, 5W 30 Synchromesh oil, all i can find on net is amsoil. Now here is the kicker, when you drain transmission of fluid and IF the tail housing oil drains as well, then just adding to the fill plug is going to cause you to loose your transmission,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,trust me. Everyone is suggesting 6 quarts and this is why,,,,,,,,,1.5 qts goes up to the out put shaft in like a little resevoir.......

NOW HERE IS MY RECCOMENDATIONS AFTER THE TREMENDOUSLY EXPENSIVE learning curve,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,remove top bolt on pto cover and fill to the top PTO bolt hole and rest easy.

I had my trans serviced at Dodge Dealership in Foley, AL, the kid did the right thing, put according to spec book and 5 months later, transmission gone, it took me 4 weeks to figure it all out, so I hope this will save some one a transmission

NV 5600 replacement::::::I just sent mine to Dallas TX to a place called Joes Transmission completely rebuilt for $1700 and he done a great job, Joe reccomends 8 qut of oil in transmission

Oil sloshing out shifter slot....It is my expierence when this occurs the level is to low in trans, why do I say this, the input shaft is the major contribution to the trans lubrication, and I took the shifter out, used a high power flash light, started the engine and wow it was raining oil,,,,,,,,,,trans level was low................I then over filled and sloshing stopped, however great turbulance like a river flowing rapidly......not as the water fall as I just spoke of.

The NV 5600 is one strangely built complicate mess, unlike to the old powerhouses of days gone by, it is strong, but tender and gentle, it only weighs 420 Pounds, wo transfer case, yes, I set her on the scales to ship to Dallas..................after I tore it all down out of curiosity, boxed up and sent away to specialist DANG I miss the OLD IH pick ups, what a power house they were, in destructable, monster pullers and red neck proof. However do truly love my CUM A LONG, heart broke over poorly engineered NV 5600
