I've heard from several Buzz Patrollers who've recently had close encounters with the new 3/4 and 1 ton Dodge Ram trucks. Dodge is currently wrapping up their testing cycles on the new trucks so several groups of engineers are tooling around the west in convoys of test trucks pulling various loads etc.

Several of my Ace Buzz Patrollers have encountered these trucks at gas stations (etc. ). Every one of them has reported being amazed at how quiet the new Cummins diesel is. "It sounded just like a regular (gas) engine" reports Gary P. "If I didn't see the Cummins badge and the bigger pipe I'd have sworn it was a (gas) V8!" adds Mark L.

The only complaint I've heard over the years about the super tough and powerful current Cummins ISB engine is that it is too loud (especially when its cold). The new engine seems to solve that while adding even more power and superior emissions control. About this time last year I told you about a patent that Cummins had received on a new block design, The description of the patent goes a long way to explain how Cummins engineers got rid of the noise (click here for the details).

Aside from the block design, the engines new high-pressure, common rail fuel-injection system utilizes pilot injection - the injection of a small amount of fuel that starts combustion before the main, power-producing, fuel charge is injected. This has the effect of smoothing out combustion pressure in the cylinder, which can be the primary source of low- and mid-range speed noise in diesel engines.

A gear-driven injection pump delivers fuel to the rail and is electronically controlled to optimize fuel pressure at the individual injectors. The system provides injection pressures up to 23,200 psi (1600 Bar) and is less dependent on engine speed than traditional pump-line injection system. The result is cleaner combustion and higher low-speed torque with better vehicle response and acceleration.

In addition to the use of pilot injection to smooth combustion pressure, the fuel-injection calibration - timing, pressure and quantity- has been refined across the entire range of speeds and loads to ensure smooth, quiet combustion. The use of pilot injection during starting also provides gasoline engine-like cold starting capability (verified at -40 F).

The all-new high pressure common rail turbo diesel delivers 555 lb. -ft. of torque at 1,400 rpm and 305 horsepower at 2,900 rpm. According to Dodge the new 5. 9-liter HO Cummins Turbo Diesel is the most powerful turbo diesel engine available in the 3/4 1 ton market. The new diesel also delivers a class-leading trailer towing rating of 23,000 lbs. GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating).

It will definitely be a key ingredient in the Ram 2500/3500's success considering that nearly 75 percent of Ram 2500/3500s sold today are equipped with the current diesel engine. "Dodge Cummins owners are very exacting in what they want," said Dennis Hurst, Executive Director, Cummins Engineering. "Simply put, they want the strongest and most durable product available and they will not be disappointed with this engine. We have delivered the most powerful diesel available in this class, while improving the drivability, durability and fuel efficiency. This new engine is also much quieter than its predecessor, but still retains the diesel power, torque and toughness that our customers demand. "

The new 5. 9-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel is so tough it is certified to a longer engine life compared to the diesels offered by its competitors from Chevrolet and Ford. The new engine has an average major overhaul interval of 350,000 miles. Not only is the High Output Cummins Turbo Diesel the most powerful diesel engine available in a full-size pickup, it is also one of the most drivable throughout all operating ranges. Maximum torque for the common rail injected Cummins Turbo Diesel occurs 400 rpm lower than the GM Duramax, and 100 rpm lower than the Ford Power Stroke.

The new engine also produces 20 percent more torque at 1000 rpm, and 10 percent higher clutch engagement torque than its predecessor. That relates to noticeably better vehicle launch when towing and accelerating, better drivability and fewer and smoother shifts.

This is gonn'a be a -- sorry ladies - GIRLIE DIESEL!!

The left wing WACKO's have taken over our ENGINE - I HATE IT! Well - I guess I'm showing my age - I'll never have one! Looks like my 2001 will be my last.

Noisy and Smokey

Part of the $4,625 option on my truck was the Smoke and Noise. One of the Harley guys at work says Loud Pipes Save Lives, I believe him... Heck if I could have paid more to make it MORE noisy I would have!

Big Rig Sound Upgrade : $200

I can see it now

You know how all those little rice-burners have their Boombing and banging music Thumping along - well now the 03 and up crowd will need a CD of ISB sounds.

A large percentage of modern technological improvements have been applauded by 95% of the users and the remaining 5% whine while they sink in the tar pits with the other dino's. I can talk ***** because I ride a '41 H-D flathead (sidevalve) complete with tankshift (don't call it suicide shift, that's something different) and foot clutch, ***** brakes, ***** suspension, etc ... .

I agree, however, I think the dominant thought process of the members here are, "It ain't good until it PROVES itself to be good".

Let the new design "break in" or "break down" and we'll be on the sidelines to watch the good, the bad, and the indifferent.

Businesses gain customers when it's good, lose them and put up with the "I told you so's... " that inevitably pop up after the fact if it's bad, and stay status quo when results are indifferent.

I've already got my 02 (old style) and am happy to stay with it for a long time regardless of how good or bad the new style is. From the aspect of someday being a repeat customer I hope for the best and prepare for the worst. ;) If that makes me a dinosaur then just call me crocodylian cause it's lasted thru the ages:D :D :D Just like ulhpilots ride.

I have not found an engine yet I can't make louder. Twin 4" exhaust with no muffler-I think they will hear ya coming and going. The guys on the construction site tell me they can hear me coming from a mile away.

WITHOUT apology, I was/am skeptical of the GM duramax engines - and WILL REMAIN skeptical until they rack up many tens of thousands of varied mileage in the hands of a representative cross section of users all over the USA...

I will prove my lack of brand bias by being EQUALLY skeptical of all the EPA mandated/dictated changes now being made in the latest offerings to come from Cummins...

LARGELY for that very reason, I just bought a brand new '02 HO 2500 - by the time I wear IT out, perhaps the Duramax and "improved" Cummins will have proved themselves, one way or the other... :p ;) :D

A Brand New Truck!

Good for you Gary!! Hope you like it as much as your last one! My Son just bought a new 2002, and it is very nice! Dodge has made some slight changes since my 94 was made even though it looks about the same.

EPA!!!!

I submit, this engine is not an improvement. All of the changes were made for EPA purposes. The outcome of the changes are then touted by the marketing types as improvements. You can talk about power increase, but a modification :) on any of our trucks will beat the HP and Torque numbers that the new engine is claiming. God help us when/if they change to the EGR design. Talked with a Cummins guy at their last open house and he said that it has not yet been determined if they will ever have to go to EGR in the Dodge PU. But if they do you can count on them claiming it is the greatest thing that has ever happened to our engines (Marketing Hype)

Ok Joe, all you need to do is the following. It may cost a tad more than $200, but I absolutely 100% garuntee it will make your truck sound much, much more like a big rig :D

Step 1: Upgrade to a 4" or larger exhaust system (if not already there)

Step 2: Remove muffler - go straight piped (if not already there)

Step 3: Roll down all windows, drive past any surface that will reflect the sound from your exhaust tip(s) back to you in the cab, step on throttle pedal

Step 4: Repeat after me - :D:D:DOo. Oo. Oo.

Desired result acheived!!

OR.....

... cut all of the exhaust off except the down pipe, then proceed to the bed and cut a 4" hole, add a y-pipe and two 5" stacks. Same effect when driving through a tunnel,under-pass ect. ;) :D :D ... Doug

2003 Better?

When the 24-valve engine came out, I wished that I had waited a couple years to buy the Cummins. Now I'm glad I got mine in '96. The 24-valves and all the extra electrons were just for the EPA. It remains to be seen if the 2003 will be a true improvement.

350,000 miles to the first overhaul? Aren't the current engines rated to 500,000 miles to the first overhaul? That's not an improvement.

My Dealer just orderd the new 2003 HD

My Dealer Just ordrer , [May 25th] his first group of the 2003 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 HD. Theres no price yet, any day now he should no the price. Any one out there no any moore info on ordering ?

I don't like quiet:{ I guess we'll see how long my '97 will last... then I guess I'll have to buy a new truck without an engine for a conversion project. I want to cram an old Mack engine into a pickup one day! Those things are unbeatable and they got all kinds of racket!!!:D
