I feel like i just have so many tire questions seeing as this is my second thread about tires in one week. Anyway my brother has a 2003 dually quad cab that is 4-wheel drive. He wants to put some mud tires on there preferably the bfg mud terrain and posibly the goodyear wrangler mtr. What he wants to know is if he does go this route what tire sizes can he put on this truck. He has the stock 17 in rims but wants that mud terrain look now. Also will it effect the tire wear or such that he will have a wider tire in front but a not as wide tire in the rear. Any help guys. Thanks
 
I've been thinking about the same thing... going with Goodyear MTR's in 285/70 R17 for my dually. Anyone know how close that puts the gap between a pair of tires in the rear? BTW, what is the stock rim width? I'd have gone with the 305/70 R17's but I'm limited in truck height for a trailer.

I'm running 265 70 17 Buckshots on my dually and have about 3/8 inch space between duals with no spacers. A guy down the street is running 315 BFG's. He put a two inch lift in the front and runs 2 inch spacers between the duals.
 
If he doesn't want the hassles of recalculating miles, etc. , Cooper Discoverer S/T mud tires come in the OEM size of LT235/80R17E and same-height LT265/70R17E.

A 305 tire to a 6-inch rim is going to do some major flexing and scrubbing (can't imagine the handling o the truck above with 315s... ).

I am running the 305 70 17 Big Horn from Maxxis and have 25,000 miles on them with at least 1/2 the tread left. No lift on the truck with a 1. 5 inch spacer. They ride queit and are awesome in the Mud/Snow. Next tires will be the BFG Mud Terrains (i didn't realize these were made in Taiwan :eek: BFG is still made in USA Oo. Oh and got them out of Jacksonville, FL at 165. 00 a piece shipped to IL. #ad
 
Those that are running a spacer on the dual rear wheels, where do you get them at and might some (2" spacer) require longer studs? Also, how does that put the tire compared with the hip?

I have gone back and forth on tires for the last couple months.



I have decided to just stick the cooper discoverer st tires pictured above on my dually.



I want some mud tread but I want some street handling.



Cooper also makes a discoverer sst in the stock tire size and this is an even more aggressive mud tire in an E load rating. I figured I would lose too much street handling though.



With something like a 2 inch spacer you will need longer studs and you are moving the tire 2 inches further out. And keep in mind the bigger tires often are wider than stock so you can sometimes wind up with 2. 5 or 3 inches or more tire moving towards the outside of the dually fender. I have never measured what that would do since the stock rims are so narrow I won't go wider since I don't like how wide tires handle on a narrow rim.



Anyway, I highly recomend some searches on spacers and stuff since that gets discussed in all forums now and then and there is a lot to consider in my opinion.



And I don't know tire sizes that well but the one post about what fits up front vs. what fits in the back could get into problems when using 4x4. You should keep tires sizes the same height so the gearing does not get into binding. I could not tell from the post what the thinking was, so don't get offended if you already know this. I figure better safe than sorry.
