Hi All,

I just bought a very clean 2003 HO 6spd 4wd QCSB with only 81,000 miles on it. Great find and very clean.
I reviewed the following TSB, http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2003/08-007-03.htm
and sure enough, my alternator bracket has a crack on the top.

My bracket is the original stamped bracket with 4 mounting holes.

The TSB calls for part # 05086742AB.
The local dealer stated that it was superseded with # 68048986AB, which I purchased.
The Cummins part # is underneath the Mopar sticker and is # 5287029.
To add to the confusion, http://quickserve.cummins.com shows yet another part # for my specific ESN, 3957394. The drawing shows it to look like the original stamped 4-hole bracket.

The problem is that I understood the TSB replacement was supposed to be a cast part.
The new part I bought is a stamped piece and only has 3 mounting holes instead of the original 4. You can see the top rear of the bracket is clipped. (See attached image)

Soooo, I'm kinda stumped on what part I should really be using. The cast part seems to make sense, and my buddies 2008 6.7 does have a cast bracket, but I'm at a loss as to what I should use on my 5.9. I'm leery of using the 3-hole bracket.

I'd sure appreciate any info if someone is in the know on these various part numbers or has experience with the 3-hole bracket.

Thanks,
T

I can't help you much but to say mine cracked and was replaced under warranty back when the truck was new. The new part was indeed a cast part.

Thanks Snoking.
Those parts diagrams sure show the cast part, but that's the same part # I bought and the part was stamped. See photo.
I'm almost thinking that the wrong part was in the box.

Those are reasonably priced, so I'll probably just buy one of those and hope it's the cast instead of what I already have.

Thanks much,
T

Thanks Shadrach.
That is the same Cummins part # that is under the Mopar label on the box I bought. I think I simply got the wrong part in the box. I do need the mounting hardware, so the bolt part number will come in handy.

Cummins P/n 5287029 and 3 screws 3093730. David

I lack the time right now to call Cummins and prove this BUT I suspect that Cummins superceded it once to the cast bracket that my '06 has, and then have superceded it again to current production used on the 4th Gens. They are not going to build two or three brackets that do the same job so they force everyone to use the newest one.

That's my theory and I'm stickin' to it.:)

Mike.

I have both cast and stamped spares but can't get to them before early August. I mention this in case you can't get what you want from Cummins or Dodge parts departments.
