I am looking at a used 2003 Laramie 3500 DRW 4x4 long bed automatic with 35k miles. $34k. Truck used locally and is spotless/dentless. It also comes with a complete extra bed/fenders/tailgate/bumper the same color as the truck. Bed was a new take-off from his friends truck.

What are the known problems with this early common rail engine/truck ?

I will be usung it for long trips pulling a 16k 5th. whl. as well as local running around. :)

Here is what KBB says. just under 30k. This of course does not include the extra body parts.

This is what a new one would cost. I believe there is a 2,500 rebate right now and you should be able to get a below invoice price. You could probably get into a 2006 for around 39k. Maybe less.

I would pm Tomeygun. He has helped many members with new trucks and pricing. He could give you a realistic comparison for what a new truck would cost w/o sales pressure. Here is his pm address https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=10713

35k sounds a little high, but the extra body parts have a value if you have a need for them.

Good luck

I bet you could get into a 2006 quad no leather but loaded for $36k. I bought my 2003 drw 4x4 quad slt loaded for $34 OTD brand new. I would have been at $36K with only $2500 rebate.

After posting my question I came to the same conclusion as several of you.

Price is too high for a 2003.

For a few more thousand a new 2006 could be purchased.

Thanks for "lining my a-- out". I see the picture more clearly now. :)

The 2003's and early '04s with the 305/555 engine are my personal favorites though. I very well may trade back down to get the fuel economy. These early ones are 20+mpg trucks and the "600" trucks are more like 17-18mpg trucks at best. The '03 still has a bunch of the 7/70 powertrain warranty left as well where an '06 is 3/36. I still own a 2003 dually and had a 2003 QC SB, very solid machines IMO, but the price on that one was way too high.
