Mark, I assume that your 3500 is a dually. I suspect that the additional weight of the dually and friction from the extra tires turning account for your poorer fuel economy. Considering mine is a 2500 your economy doesn't seem out of line.

No, actually it's a SRW.

Additional note--I just happened to check the hourmeter at that last fillup, and it was at an even 100. It didn't occur to me to check it when I first picked up the truck from the dealer, to see if they recorded any run-in time with it installed in the vehicle (I would doubt it). If that's all attributable to my driving, 5119 miles divided by 100 hours equals a cumulative average driving speed of 51. 2 MPH  (That's what happens when jump right on the highway for a major road trip when you first pick up the truck  )

Mileage report: 2003, 4x4 3. 73 RE, Calif model, auto. Picked it up Monday in Idaho drove home 1,100 miles. First tank 18. 5 MPG, Second tank 21. 0. I am very pleased with this truck. Purchased from Dave Smith Motors, Kellogg Idaho. Happy trails, Gary

mgonske,

No you are not alone, I too though I was the only getting less than 20mpg in my truck. My fuel mileage with 5k miles on the clock is about the same as yours. Best tank 17. 7 worst in the 15s (except when towing) and most of my driving is open road. I'll be happy if it gets 18 consistantly, like my last truck did. Not bad for a 4 ton behemoth :D

Here's what you can expect from a 2 x4, with 10% super driviing skill and 90% luck of the draw weather-wise.

Through the first 4,500 miles 21. 9 mpg with 85% of it being gentle hill and dale Interstate driving on the same 85 mile route everyday. Freeway ramp on and off. Driving style is always the same: cruise control at 72 mph, set the radio to NPR, and hope everything slower gets out of the way. Best single single trip mileage 24. 2.

Dealer put on some free mudflaps and midway through the first 4,500 and mileage dropped . 2. Added a Leer cap, 100 XQ, (looks unbelievably great) mileage went up . 5 as far as I can tell. I guess the invisible aerodynamics are there.

Now lugging 600 lbs of sandbag ballast in the rear, mileage is not measurably affected. Trip minder seems to be either right on or off by . 1 to . 2 mpg.

"Ext-adict" with this thing. Best diesel I've ever owned or driven
