The truck in question is a 2003, 2500 with high output Cummins, 6 speed NV-5600 and the electric shift transfer case.

Coming home from church, running on the interstate about 65, I started to get a very bad vibration in the entire truck. Slowed to 60 it went away for a few minutes. Then the vibration hit again really bad. I hit the clutch pedal to disengage and headed to the shoulder. All of a sudden the vibration hit super bad and there was a terrible mechanical BANG, truck had the rear wheels trying to lock up and wicked banging noise.

Got off on the shoulder, and first thing I saw was a large oil trail from the interstate to the shoulder. Looked under the truck, The Transfer case had blown the side out and the bottom and rear. Nothing but gears showing. I had the truck brought home on a roll back. Now I need to find a used transfer case.

All my Dodge truck info just calls the transfer case a "Electric Shift on the Fly" option DH3P. So actually what is the transfer case I am looking for Model Number/Make ? If I cant find a electric shift version, can I put in a conventional manual shift and add the shifter ? Or will I toss codes and screw up the computer with a non electric shift T Case.

Thanks for your help

Is there a tag on the transfer case? I would inspect the front driveshaft to make there is not a u joint or the cv joint binding that could have caused your problem.

I finally got it home to late to go under and look for tags. The only place I had to drop her off the roll back was in a muddy spot in the drive way. Tomorrow, I will move her to dry ground. Yes, I will check the front drive shaft. If I can find the T Cast Tag, I will post it tomorrow early afternoon.

Thank You

You have a NV273. The manual shift t case is a NV271. To change you would have to cut a hole in the console ( assuming you have one and it sounds like you have a Laramie ) and the floor beneath it. It would be the long console spot closest to your right leg. Too bad you are so far away as I have a spare in my garage.

Shadrach;
Thanks for the info, I appreciate the help.
Yes, AB is a little far for a day trip. I would need a extra bottle of Pepsie and a sandwich LOL

Electric shift is the issue.... you can change the input shaft to make an auto transmission T-case work behind your manual, if you can find one.... They're out there, but not cheap, I usually find them for $1k up.....

T Case problem over. I could not find a manual transmission T Case anywhere, and if I did, they wanted a core charge and I had to pay shipping.

I bought a Chrysler reman from my dodge dealer. Comes with a 3 yr/36K mile parts and labor warantee,

Thanks for all you ideas

I did a lot of thunkin and this is a much better deal than some unknown take out, no matter how low the miles. You never know if it was abused. And with the 3/36 warantee, I am happy.

They have come up a bit in price, but still not bad for what you get.
