I'm gonna replace my worn out tires with a set of 3rd Gen wheels and tires. My truck is a 1997 12-valve, 4x4, auto with 3. 54 gears and I'm wondering how the tires will effect power and mileage. Do you think I'll need a gear change? According to an online calculator, the 265/75-16s have a rev. per mile of 579 and the 3rd Gen tires are about 396. How will this effect the truck? Is the rear wheel ABS gonna get screwed up? Speedo gear change to correct the speedo reading?

That seems like a lot of difference! What size tires are on the 17s? LT265/70R17E are 657 revs per mile. My LT265/75R16E are 654. Where did you get the 396?

I'm wondering the same thing.

396 revs per mile seems a little off.

rmcnamee I think your math is off. I took my stock 245/75/16s off and put wheels/tires off an '03 on my Ram. My speedo went from reading about 2% fast to less than 1% slow. . . it's more accurate now. No change whatsoever in observed power & milage. Just do it! See pics in my Readers' Rigs album.

The online calculators are off-- way off.

265-75R16s will be right around 655 revs/miles. It will vary from one manufacturer to another. Toyos are 658 rev/mi in this size for their A/Ts

265-70r17s are very close to this. In the Toyos, they are also 658 revs/mi.

The extra inch in wheel diameter is almost perfectly offset by the lower profile tire on the 17s (70 series instead of 75 series).

The lower profile should reduce sidewall flex, and perhaps help mpg.

Go ahead and do the 3rd gen wheels-- they will work on your truck jusr fine.

I figured something was not right with the math due to the vast differences in RPMs of each tire. I used an online calculator, so maybe I plugged in the wrong numbers or tire sizes. Anyway, it would appear that I have nothing to loss, so I'll have to pick-up a set of 2003 wheels and tires. Thanks everyone.
