I am looking at a 2003 Dodge 2500 4X4 automatic trans. On the valve cover it says that is has 305 HP. Is this a high output engine.

Yes, for '03 the HO was 305HP.

Make sure it has the 48RE transmission and not the 47RE.

Pretty sure the HOs only came with 48REs, the SOs came with the 47REs if they were built before 1/1/03 after that they were all 48REs regardless of motor.
