2004 Dodge 2500 Ram diesel - Engine knock

Started up the '04 Dodge 2500 Ram diesel & there is a serious engine knock. We drove it last night & it had no problems but this morning is a different thing.



This truck has about 260K miles & I've owned it since 170K. I checked the dip stick & oil level is okay and oil pressure looked good. The engine seemed to have a miss & was idling rough.



I'm about 10 miles from my regular mechanic. I'm going to check with him tomorrow for his advice ... Guess I may need to have it towed.



Any comments? Does this sound like the "death knell?"

Don't drive it. Best case, you have an injector tip cracked or pintle hung open and spraying fuel out of the bowl. Its extremly hard on rings and the piston itself.



Worst case the piston is melted and scuffing the cylinder or it dropped a valve.
