I bought a used 04 about 30 days ago. Do any of you know how I can tell whether I have the 250 horsepower or the 305 horsepower version of the motor?

I know I probably sound like a complete idiot to some of you, but... well... . okay I am a complete idiot. So have some pity on me and help me out will ya?

If you look on the engine tag on side of the valve cover it will tell you,Alao if your V. I. N. has a c in the 8th spot it should be a H. O. motor I believe.

Thanks for the quick reply Blue Ox. I do have a c in the 8th position of my VIN. It says nothing about HO on the valve cover. It does say 329hp at 2900rpm though. That is confusing. So is it a 329hp motor?

Got me. That is why I am putting it out to the experts on the forum. All I know is I loved my old 97 2500 and got a sweet deal on this 04 3500. So I bought it and now I am trying to figure out what the heck I have.

The SO motor in 04 has the 47re. The HO has has the 48re. The valve cover will say what the hp is. 250,305, or 325 if it's an 04. 5 Look under the truck and see if it has a cat. If so, it's an 04. 5. The 04. 5's were all HO's.

I think I got that right.

All good information Rams-n-Hogs. Thank you. I will check to see if there is a cat under the hood. But first, can somebody tell me what the heck a cat is? I see you guys talking about removing the cat, but I thought maybe this was a reference to the family pet warming under the hood on a cold winter night. What the heck is a cat?

Oh, a catalytic converter under the truck. I mis-read Rams-n-Hogs. I thought he said under the hood. Yes, I have a catalytic converter. HO it is then. Thank you for your help everyone.

Cat=catalitic converter. It's a large bulge in the exhaust pipe in front of the muffler where it passes above the frame cross member.

There were two versions of the HO in 2004. Up to 1/1/2004 was the 305/555 and after 1/1/2004 (aka 2004. 5) was the 525/600. Only the 525/600 has the cat.

Correction: After 1/1/2004 it was a 325/600 motor.

I don't believe they had an SO at all in 2004. Maybe in California.

Well driverno8, at least you have the altitude working in your favor. Up here above 5000 feet we need all the ponies we can get.

I am still trying to figure out the transmission, MStaggs. Now that I know what motor I have that is my next quest. Since I didn't buy new, I am putting all of the pieces together after the fact. Dodge really doesn't have any information on their site.

In california there were 3 engines available in 04, SO/305/325 HP due to mid year model. I waited for the HO in Ca. which was not available until March. When I looked at them in April of 04, the sales rep could only tell me the HP and torque numbers and nothing else. The tow ratings came from the 305 HP version, in fact I purchased the shop manuel (for a lot of money) and it only has the early SO and HO versions before mid year production.
