My 2004 3500 has 6500 miles and at about 4500 it started sounding like the second generation motors with a very distinctive diesel knock or rod knock type sound. My other two buddys have a 2005 and 2003 and they dont sound like this. Any experience with this please help! Thanks

My '04 sounds alot like my '01 did at times. I think It has gotten noisier as I put on miles, or I my hearing is comming back. Not sure yet. At idle it is very quiet.

im very familar with my 12v sound, as well as both 24v, new and old, and imho, the new 24v sounds exactly the same, as far as the sound of the diesel knock, but its toned down alot on the 3rd gen engine. i like the old 24v sound, i always listen for them when im workin, and most of the time its a ups or fed. ex. truck pullin in when i think its a 2nd gen 24v :p . but i will always prefer the sound of my 12v! Oo.

Mine has started to do the same but only after the dealer changed out a leaking CP3. This leads to believe the CP3 might be the culprit. Only thing is it does it at idle in gear (auto) but when I put it in neutral the knocking sound goes away and the normal diesel sound is all thats heard.

Mine got somewhat louder after I changed out the dealer oil for the Amsoil 5W-30 series 3000,but my 2nd gen did that too.

Do a search re bad injectors and you'll find that many of us have had the same experience. When my '03 first started it was only noisy when cold, then all of the time. In my case it turned out to be the #4 injector. Fairly common problem.

Mine got significantly quieter after I put Amsoil 15W-40 in it. Wonder why...

if you unplug the map sensor, it will sound like a second gen, or maybe the fuel pressure sensor, cant remember, but it will turn the cel on and it will go into limp mode, and will have no power... ...

Because engines run quieter with oil in them?? ;)

My old '82 Toyota truck knocked really bad before I realized the oil had leaked out and the rod bearing was toast. :-laf

If someone can figure out how to get rid of the pilot injection on these third gens and make them sound like the 2nd gens, it would be great I know alot of people who will agree with me, If we had the option of making these trucks sound like the 2nd gens and keep the power it would be great, as long as we can still use our boxes. I know there is a way and when someone figures it out it would be a very wonderful day for me.

My '85 Bronco II 2. 8L V6 had a leaky rear main. After a short time I could tell when it was 1 quart low just by the sound of the engine. I got really good at it.

Sorry to get off topic and all nostalgic.

Jaydog - if I were you I'd just sit and wait on it. You're covered by a very comprehensive warranty, so if the engine explodes it's okay (sort of). Also, try different fuel stations. There is some variation in diesel quality among suppliers.

Do you track fuel mileage every tank? If so, what sort of trends have you noticed?
